Two questions; My hull ID is 3124 132. I'm sure it's a '72 which I believe is the first year it was made but how many boat were made prior to mine. I'm thinking I've got one of the oldest 22s in existance. Can any one tell me if the HIN tells me how many were made before mine. And who has the oldest 22? Also, I'm always anxious to see pics of other 22s but have never seen a light blue hull like mine. I don't think its been painted. Is it one of a kind or does it have a sister somewhere?

Serial

On the starboard side of the transom there should be a long set of numbers and letters, thats your serial. Mine is xdyj2843m79f. The last two digits are the year of your model. Hope I helped.

Too old for HIN?

David / Cleveland - If my boat was built before Nov. 1, 1972 the HIN was not required, right? There are no numbers on the starboard side of the transom (as there is on my SeaRay). The manufacturer's plate with hull number is on the inside (cockpit) center of the transom. Thanks for responding.

I have a photo album on my flickr account with all the photos of my 74 ODay 22. Click on the thumbnails to the right of the page after clicking on this link below. I havent seen a light blue hull either. Is it original paint?

I think new.....

Hard to tell from the photo, boat your does not seem to have the tell tale "slooped" aft. Yours seems to be more the straing up and down aft, which are the new ones compared to my 1972 O22

Not straight

Chris - I'll get a pic of the stern but it's not straight vertically if that's what you're asking. What numbers are on your boat and where? I have nothing on the outside transom, starboard. Only an O'Day metal plate inside the transom, center.

Ought to call Rudy!

Howdy, looks like a call to Rudy Nickerson at D & R Marine 14 Water St Assonet, Ma 02702 Ph 508 644-3001 would be in order, tell him what you have, he may can make sense of the Oday HIN's of boats built prior to November, 1, 1972. Hope that helps. Jack

Hull ID

I just got my title and it says it's a 77 and this is my hull ID XDYJ2581M771. By everything Im reading then it should be a 71, but I don't think it is, I believe it a 77. Not sure when the first 22 was built because I'm new to this. When I was trying to date mine, I was told to look for a few tell tales ie: the top hand rails on the older ones had 5 handle openings as opposed to six, and the layout in the cabin was different on the earlier ones. Not sure what year the changes were made.

I found this on a daysailor forum.

Question I own a 1967 O'Day Day Sailer. It has the original O'Day data plate in side on the forward wall of the cuddy. It is engraved with a hull # of 15344 and a class # of 2724. Since this boat was built before hull numbers were required in the fibreglass and I have registration documentation back to 1972, with the boat registered against the hull number, I believe the plate has not been altered. Does anyone have an explanation for the high hull number. I have been told that O'Day tracked all of the hulls it built (regardless of type or class) by the number and assigned a class number that represented the number of boats in that class. Also the class number is the number that should appear on the sail. Answer Before the requirement for the 12-digit Hull I.D. Number, O'Day gave every boat 2 numbers, a Hull# and a Class#. The Hull# represented how many total boats O'Day had built, and the Class# represented how many of that Class O'Day had built. So your 1967 DS I was the 15344th boat that O'Day built, and the 2724th Day Sailer. If there is a number on your sail, it should be the Class# 2724. This was O'Day's method of serial numbers for their boats until the 12-digit HIN went into effect on November 1, 1972. I added the link. Does that help?

Look closely

Tom Check the last digit on the ID again to see if it is actually the letter "I" or "L". The last few digits in the ID most likely indicate the boat being completed in April ("I") or July ("L") of 1977.
