How Often and How Far ?

I am literally 5 minutes from my boat and get out on either on my boat or someone elses boat a minimum of 4 times a week. I take an average of 4 3-4 day trips and usually one 2 week cruise. The Western end of Lake Ontario is well suited for short cruises as destinations are numerous and spaced reasonably close. I have almost 25 destinations within 45 miles of my home port.

We have a lake boat, Cat 22 ad a coastal boat, Oday 25 that we keep in a slip on the coast. Between the two we sail 3 days a week when we are teaching. During breaks we pretty much live on the Oday and sail everyday. We just spent the whole summer on the Oday. We have three 5 day breaks, a 9 day break over Thanksgiving and then the summer, all of which we spend sailing. We also have a 2 week break over Christmas/New Years but that is usually a ski vacation. We travel as far out and back as time wll allow.

I live about 15 minutes from the boat. I usually go out 3-4 times a week. At least once on the weekend and a few times during the week depending on my work. The only downside is that I dock in the ICW and I have to motor for about and hour and go under two bridges before I get to the Gulf of Mexico.

Last summer, first season boating, maybe 8-9 trips out. This summer, the boat lives on a trailer rigged up at a marina 15 minutes from home. Now that the lights are working, we will go out evenings after work, (Once a week) and most Sat. aftrnoons. 1 overnighter so far. Last weekend, I counted up float plans in my book for this summer, 23 trips out (3-4hrs) so far this season. David Coughlin

We sail about 30 days a year, one or two days at a time and in a very localized area that has great sailing. My brother sails 40-50days as a summer cruise in a large area that has great cruising. Two different approaches that both work. We have a little time all year long. He had a lot of time in the summer.

The suggestion that you find a location to dry sail is a good one. I raced on a boat that the owner used that way. Hook up, drag it to the ramp, launch it, and go sailing. It was great. Then when you need to work on the boat, you bring it home. When you want to sail at another location, it gets most of the way there at 55mph.

My sailing is limited only by the fact of 24 hour days and 7 day weeks . I need to take care of my home, I need to earn a living, I am not quite so young as I once was so I see my medicine man more often than I like and sometimes I get to go sailing.

Once the rain stops and the lake is full, twice a week - beer can on Tuesday after work, then Saturday or Sunday. Figure mid-May through September. We're about 45 miles from the lake and keep the boat in a county owned marina.

Not going to post a poll cause there are too many variables in the answers, but:

How often do you go out sailing (in season) ...every weekend...? Once or twice a month...? Couple times a year...? everyday cause your in the Navy...?

And related to that...How far do you live from the water/your boat...?
Is the lake in the back yard...? You live in town nearby...? You travel 1-2 hrs to get there...? Further...?

We average going out every other weekend during the season here in Maine(over the last 10 years). For me, that's mid June through October. We also vacation onboard for usually 2 weeks. Plus I day sail as much as once a week during the season, often by myself. These day sails end up taking about a half a day and involve 10 to 20 pleasant miles.

What helps to make this doable is living within walking distance of the boat. We live just above the harbor the boat is moored. We have spent several years with the boat much farther away but still used it quite a bit. The daysailing is location driven of course. I get onboard the boat at least once a week while it's in the water.
