From the frying pan into the fire...
Many years ago, when I was a teenager, I had a 14' plywood fishing boat with a 20 HP Mercury outboard that I used for fishing, squirrel hunting (along several creeks) and just riding around. My cousin and I were going squirrel hunting one morning, and arrived at the ramp on the river before light. We found several boats lined up to launch, and were standing by the dock watching and waiting our turn. Two guys launched their 16-17' fiberglass boat. One guy on the dock walked out to the end holding the bow line while the other drove the truck and trailer back to the parking lot. They were probably going duck hunting, as we could see a couple of automatic shotguns in the boat. Suddenly the guy holding the bow line gets excited and yells to the driver that the boat is sinking- they left the plug out. The guy gets so excited he drops the bow line, and the current quickly takes the boat down the river, slowly filling with water. As it was about 15 degrees, no one wants to go swimmming. Fortunately the next crew in line had their act together, and quickly launched their boat, and caught the sinking boat a couple of hundred yards down the river. They pulled it by the bowline slowly until enough water drained out that one guy could go aboard and put the plug in, then pulled it to the ramp, where the crew promptly loaded it back on the trailer and went home. I don't know about the other dozen or so people who watched all of this, but after that I always double-checked my plug before I launched... -Paul
