I just had a chain plate made here in paradise. It's a chunck on stainless steel 4 inches long 1 inch wide and about 1/4 inch thick, with a flange welded on for thru deck machine screws. It cost me $104.00 I'm not a smart man, but that seems a bit steep. I know stainless is expensive and hard to work on. Did I get %^$#&*. Or should it have cost about 40 to 50 bucks like I suspect? Paradise Tax

I remember paying more for Pineapple, sugar, and Macadamia Nuts there than what they were back here on the mainland. I always figured what I did not have to spend on clothes offset the increase.

How much is too much?

Dan: There are a couple of factors here. First no body wants to work for nothing. I think paying a mechanic $70+ per hour to work on my car is too high but thats what it cost. Second not too many can cut, weld and finish S.S. My understanding is the polishing is what is soooo time consuming. Lets say you had $10 in materials. And the guy must be getting at least $40-50/hr if he did this in 2 hours plus tax you probably did OK. I priced out having seats put on our stern pulpit. It was about 50 hours of labor alone. Needless to say I still have my original stern pulpit.
