One of the issues I forgot to mention regarding the search for a boat is the main limitation. There is really only one lake close that is worth sailing, and there are no slips available for about a year or longer. SO, I needed to find a sailboat for sail that is already living in a slip on THAT LAKE. Thus, drastically shrinking my universe of potential sailboats to purchase. I've been watching for boats on that lake for more than a year. Clearly not an optimal path to buy a sailboat, but the only one I had. When we certified about 8 years ago, we joined Sailtime in Newport Beach, but we did not sail nearly as much as we could have due to the traveling time required. I really wanted something much closer that I wouldn't have to tow or assemble on each trip. There have only been 3 potential boats available over the last year and a half.

@ric3 that is all relevant information and supports why you are asking the question.

Is there a short term/long term plan regarding sailing?

My plan is to sail and spend as much time as possible at the lake, join yacht club and possibly do some racing. I’ll do it until I get too board or too old. Then buy or charter at more exciting places later on.

I’m sure I will enjoy it- as long as I am sailing. I do plan on joining AYC.

‘About time ‘ looks to be in good condition for an early 90’s boat. Sugar scoop on stern is convenient feature, your survey will tell more, looks like limited inventory in your location. In northeast more sailboats than sailors, more each year, the main cost here is winter storage, dock/mooring cost, and maintenance. The boat your looking at is less than 3 years here on a slip…,if that helps. Good luck.

Getting back to best price, it would be the value you are willing to pay for the experience you desire.

Looking at the boat and the identified issues, I would take more time to clarify the condition of the engine. Hours of use, mechanical inspection, condition of transmission and prop shaft system would be on my list.

Your idea of racing identifies the sails as a priority item to replace on the boat.
Budget:
Mainsail about $2800
Furler - while it may be as simple as repairing the upper end of your present furler, when racing is important, reliability and performance of the furler hardware is a priority. Price out different brands. Harken, CDI, Schaffer Marine, Pro-Furl. All have their promotors. I like the reliability of Harken. Two to Three BOAT bucks (Break Out Another Thousand).

In planning this purchase anticipate in addition to the boat purchase price there will be 30 to 50% more spent to get the boat to the condition your dreams desire.

Once again, I appreciate all of the information and opinions provided. Sounds like I will be spending a little more than I anticipated. I can only hope that we will have as much luck with our sailboat as we have/had with our last 7 [motor] boats. I am going to try again uploading photos of the boat.

Welcome to sailboat ownership and the SBO forums. You have chosen wisely the site to post your questions on. It is always good to welcome a new member, and I hope you have a long and enjoyable time on both your boat, when you make the decision to buy, and here with us.

I am not very familiar with the buying process of sailboats. My few purchases have been small and quick, but as an experienced used equipment buyer, and browser of the boating classifieds, I would say 15 months is a long time for a used boat to remain on the market. Your seller is probably motivated.

The mainsail will be expensive to replace, the bottom paint is probably something you should have done anyhow, unless it was just done, and the rest of the items sound fairly minor and the type of items you will have to replace someday anyhow.

It's good to start your new love affair with brand new fuel lines, reliable instruments, and fresh chaffing gear. You're likely to find more that needs attention as you get to know your new boat better, no matter what the survey says. Use the professionally appraised value as your starting point and land on either side of that, depending upon your gut, your bank account, and your conscience.

If you don't mind, please let us know a little more about your sailboat experiences and skill sets. Work you can do yourself may make something like replacing a leaky fuel line trivial, or even the roller-furling headsail. Having to hire a professional to not only replace the roller-furler, but also tune your standing rigging, will add boat bucks to the cost well beyond the part price.

Good luck and keep posting. We especially love pictures.

I just uploaded pictures (finally). I think we will close on the boat on Tuesday. Then i can get to work!

That boat looks very nice (looking at the limited photos).

Enjoy the heck out of it!
