about what should i expect to spend for a new main with two reef points and a 130 genoa that will fit a harken reefing furler? of the size for a 32-36 ft boat.... round numbers for cruising sails of decent quality...

how about the expected cost of decent used sails?
thanks

Go to fx sails and get an online quote. Or check out the other online sites with an online quote.

I recently replaced sails on a 30 footer thru fx and paid about 1600 for the jib and 2000 for the main - just as a point of reference.

I got my 140 genny and asym for my boat right here at SBO. Nice online estimator. Just click on store then sail loft and bingo. High quality sails from Doyle.

Almost every sailmaker site has a calculator.... but if you are the budget minded type of guy... go here: http://www.thesailwarehouse.com. I can also recommend http://www.northsailsdirect.com/

Baconsails.com in Annapoolis has hundreds of used sails you can check out on their web site. 10-day return policy. Honest assessments of the sail's quality, too.

I'll throw in a good word also for Martin at Somerset Sails.....

... we bought new sails for....

... the Mac there and he had more features for the buck than any other place I could find including the off-shore lofts and talked to me a long time to make sure we got what would work for the type of sailing we do.

After getting the Endeavour we sent him the used head sail to get a protective UV sewn on. He got a hold of us and let us know that the sail that came with the boat was really for more serious off-shore work and that he wouldn't recommend it for what we were doing in Florida and the Keys. He traded us for a lighter sail that would work better for us and put the UV protection on it and the sail we got looked better to me than what he got from us. On both of the head sails we wanted the same Sailrite color for the UV that isn't so common to match the rest of our canvas. We ordered it from Sailrite and had it drop shipped to him and he sent all of the leftover material to us with the sails.

A very good guy to work with and the sails are made here in upstate New York. When you are ready it sure wouldn't hurt to call him and get a quote.

For our eastern Canadian friends: One Canadian Mac owner just drove over to Martin's in upstate New York and save himself some money vs. having a sail sent from the U.S. into Canada. I'll leave it up to you to figure out how/why ;),

I think FX is currently offering a mid-winter discount. Friend of mine got a great deal on a combo main/furling genoa package deal last year. Not top quality, but good enough for most cruising.

I also have bought a number of used sails from Bacons over the years. My experience there has been excellent as I think they underrate their sails.

But when buying new or used sails, just remember three things: measure, measure, and then measure again. Do not depend on stock sail plans -- ever.

You will find a significant difference in the price between a sail for a 32 and a 36 for boat. Sails are priced by area, and that grows as a square as length goes up.

If you go full batten main at that size, I'd suggest a batten car system like Tides Marine Strongtrack.

A second +1 for Martin at Somerset. He's great.

For new sails check with Island Planet Sails, Beaverton Oregon. Great service and good products at a good price:

For Used sails check with Minney's Yacht Surplus: http://www.minneysyachtsurplus.com/
I've had good experiences with both of these dealers.
