How much should I buy?

I'm in the process of removing the bottom paint from my O'day 26. I've been reading a lot of advice on this forum about using a barrier coat on bare gel coat. From what I have read, quite a few coats must be used. Seeing as how the Interlux 2000E costs about $80 a gallon, I was just wondering if anyone has used this stuff on a similiar size boat. How much did you use? Also, did you use a solvent like the Interlux 202? If so, how much was needed? Finally, does the Interlux 2000E work well with West Marine CPP ablative paint? As you can probably tell, money is a bit of an object, but I do want to do the right thing. I definitely don't want to scrape all this sh*t off again next year because I took the cheap route. Thanks.

You will probably need between 2 and 3 gallons to get 4 coats of the barrier. Next you should paint on a hard antifouling to act as a signal coat that is a different color than your CPP. I used a WM cheap hard paint. You need something between the barrier and the CPP because once the barrier cures you cannot paint it without sanding it first which defeats the purpose of building up the barrier. Try boatersland.com. I have found their prices to be some of the lowest on the net. Hopefully I will not get yelled at for recommending someone other than the chandlery here but I do not think they sell this paint. Also call the tech people at Interlux. They are very helpfull. I stripped my 25 to the gelcoat last year and did the barrier coat with 2 gallons. I put the CPP gold from WM over that (2 coats from one gallon) and plan to put another 2 coats this season with a different color. Based on recommendations from WM and Interlux, I'm not sure if a hard coat is necessary so long as you recoat before your ablative wears to the barrier.

Cheaper by the gallon and the price/gallon

is soaring year by year. Buy the two gallons. The paint doesn't degrade to any extent so if you buy more than you need, it will be a cheap coat later. r.w.landau

barrier coat

Being an inland sailor, I am not sure what the purpose of a barrier coat is. I typically apply bottomkote each spring before splashing. Am I missing something important for freshwater, or is a barrier coat specific to salt water?

Roger Barrier Coat related to Blisters

The barrier coat is to prevent water penetration into the hull. I used it in freshwater when I noticed a few small blisters. I'd went too long between antifouling and had to strip down to gelcoat anyway so decided to do the barrier coat. It is a lot of work to get all of the old paint off and my barrrier required a primer coat to stick well. So after all of the sanding I did a couple coats of primer, four coats of barrier coat and then finally two coats of antifouling. I put the boat back in the water and didn't do anything for a couple or three years and still had a good bottom.
