Looking to purchase a cat 30 in the near future, and I was wondering how much a surveyer should cost. I've looked in the archives and everyone agrees to get a good surveyer, but I could not find any prices. The boats I am looking at are in Texas and Florida. I did learn from the archives a good way to find a surveyer was to ask Boats US since thats where I will most likely purchase insurance. Any help would be great. Don

Surveyor

Should cost between $15 and $20/foot and you'll find a list on the NAMS (Nat. Assoc. of Marine Surveyors) site. Quality counts here so don't go with the cheapest one. Try to be there when the survey is done since it;s a good learning opportunity. NAMS is much more extensive and unbiased compared with the BoatUS list and you'd do well to check around for other insurance quotes too. Don

Survey costs

The cost of a survey sort of depends on where the survey is done, size and type of boat, and what you wnat the surveyor to do. Here on the Chesapeake Bay, survey costs run from a low of $12 per foot to about twice that. Most will go along on your sea trial (a must)for that cost. BUT, if you want the surveyor to go aloft and take a look at things from the spreaders to the masthead, it may cost more. Also, be sure you know what you want your surveyor to do in regard to the engine. Many surveyors are only able to tell you some very rudimentary things about an inboard. If you feel the need, for example, to have a compression test, or an oil analysis, best to discuss that need (and cost) beforehand.

NYC Prices

Here in the NY Metro area where everything seems to cost more, I paid $20.00/ft. That did not include going aloft and only a brief look at the sails. Because it was winter and the boat was on the hard it did not include a sea trial.
