How much pressure does anchoring create?

Hey braintrust, I'm planning on adding a small bowsprit to get the anchor out away from my bow. Because of the pulpit I need to make the rode run over a roller and back to the cleat. I can't bypass the roller to the deck chocks. The forestay will not run out to the bowsprit. I don't like the look of the Bow rollers so I want to make a sprit. The fabricator wants to know how many ppsi to build the thing for? ie: can he build a bowsprit (tripod) out of 7/8" stainless (36" long) Or does he need 1.5" stainless tubing? The boat displaces 12,000 lbs. Any advices will be appreciated.

When I built mine

I used 2x6 white oak with 1 1/2 x4 inch cheeks and put the roller out at the end. With a 7:1 scope it is only an 8 or 9 degree load on the sprit. Put another way a 5000 pound load on the anchor would produce about a 700 pound load on the roller. If you are not anchoring with all chain and no snubber you probably will have failures elsewhere before you can over load the bowsprit and roller.

Consider sideloading as well

The manual on my C30 states to not leave the anchor rode on the roller because the sprit is not designed for side loads. If you've already calculated for this I think you'll be fine. It looks like the pictures Stu linked to would have no problems either. Good luck, Jim
