I have 2 gallons of the Pettit Protect barrier coat. I will be putting this on the bottom of my Catalina 22. Using the calculations, I figured that the bottom of the boat is about 140 Sq ft. Each 1 gal of Pettit Protect covers about 225 sq ft. With 3 coats that is a need for about 420 sq ft and it comes out to 450 sq ft of Pettit. That is close. Has anyone ever used the Pettit Protect and will 2 gallons be enough to cover the bottom fully with 3 coats?

wow never used that product last time I bottom painted my boat used interlux bought a gallon and had a decent amount of left over and it still lasted it's full life span.

Unless I'm totally out of the loop is pettit not a bottom paint? if that's the case I will slink away back into the dark corner and chastise myself for buttin in. Anyway 2 gallons seems like a crap ton of paint in that amount of space.

I used Interlux Interprotect 2000 on my hull. Calculations were similar and I 'thought' 1 gallon would do it, but considering the keel and rudder which also needed barrier coat I decided to go with 2 full gallons as recommended by Stingy Sailor and others who had done the job previously. At the end of the day there is nothing wrong with 'extra' coats when it comes to your barrier coat, better safe than sorry.
I don't know how much you are paying for the Pettit barrier coat, but the SBO store has the prices and free shipping on Interlux products, about $100 per 1 gallon kit vs. $140 at West Marine. Just food for thought.

Most of the commentary around these parts seems to focus on IP2000e, but at the end of the day Petit Protect is probably not that much different. If you're concerned about having enough product to cover, cover the waterline and the areas that contact the trailer more and pay less attention to the rest.

Thanks all, That helps. The Pettit Protect is a high-build barrier epoxy as opposed to a bottom paint. It generally takes less coats than the Interlux 2000e as each coat is 4 mil when it dries and goes on at about 7 mil wet. Just have to have 12 mil minimum when done. Will concentrate on the waterline and bunk areas.

Interlux Interprotect 2000E is also an epoxy barrier coat, pretty sure it also high build. You're fine with either product, bottom paints will be compatible with both. That said, if you use Pettit bottom paint it always good to use same brand products. use a 1/4" nap roller to roll on... I used foam rollers at first and that is just too thin. Don't worry about 'orange peel', just roll it on and if you want a smother finish for the bottom paint you can long board it with 120 grit. Interprotect is so tough when cured that can longboard without any fear of taking too much off or burning through, I'm sure the Pettit is the same.
