Almost ready to paint the bottom of my Ericson 27...
Does anybody know a good calculating formula/rule of thumb on how much paint is needed?

Also, a friend of mine is about to start painting the deck of his J35 - how much paint does he need (considering 3 coats of Interlux perfection)

any info is appreciated.
Cheers,
V

All the paint mfgs.

All the paint mfgs. have a formula for how much bottom paint is needed. They all seem to be pretty close to each other. Go to Petit, or whom ever's paint you choose, and it will tell you.

Re: All the paint mfgs.

Bottom paint goes on thicker than deck paint. I allow about 200 square feet per gallon for bottom paint per coat and about 400 square feet per coat for deck paint or wall paint or house paint. If it is much thicker than that you get a lot of runs and if it is very much thinner you will need more coats.

If you figure a gallon per coat you'll be safe (roughly 400 sq/ft). Any extra just paint the first 18" from the waterline and leading edges of the keel and rudder.

I can tell you that it took about 2/3 of a gallon for our E27 which included a second coat on the leading edges

I used 1 gallon of West Marine that gave me 2 coats and a little more for leading edges on my 27 footer. And I wasn't using it particularly sparingly.

I use a 3/16" nap roller and roll it out just as thin as possible. I paint each year and the previous year's paint is just about worn off. So there is no year-to-year build up.

Build up is bad IMHO, and I have spent four years aggressively sanding to remove all of the excess paint (with chips) that I have applied.

I use just UNDER one gallon for my h40.5! I used to use about 1.5 gallons per coat!

Your going to need at least 3 quarts and when you buy a gallon the fourth quart is priactically free. I used just a little less than a gal on the Cat27 and a full gallon on the Luger 30.
