Hi: I am considering buying a '88 Hunter 23 without rigging and mast. I just researched the specs and found that it takes a 33 foot mast. Can I go with smaller rig, say 26 footer that I have from a Catalina 22? The Hunter is the fixed keel model. Thanks, Simon

I wouldn't

You can go with anything you want, but you would be reducing sail area by a whole bunch. Having had a 1988 H23 I don't remember it as being a speed-racer to start with. Just my opinion. Ron

H23 mast isn't 33 feet long

Simon: The H23 mast is not 33 feet long. The distance from the tip of the mast to the Dead Water Line (DWL) is 33 feet. This figure is important for clearing overhead structures such as bridges. The true length of the mast is somewhat shorter. I don't know what that is. - Kevin

H23 is a fast, light inshore racer!

The displacement to length ratio, which is actually (Disp/2240)/(0.01*LWL)**3, for a Hunter 23 is 146. Boats with a ratio of 120 to 250 are considered Light. The sail area to displacement ratio, which is defined to be SA / (Disp/64)**2/3 , is 20.7 for an H23 with a jib. (My Hunter has only a 115% Genoa so SA/D is 22.9. Actually, the production foresail for an H23 is a 110% Genoa but mine stretched over time.) Values over 18-20 are seen on racing dinghies, inshore racers and ocean racing yachts. Values over 22 are considered Very Fast and values below 16 are considered Fairly Slow. The capsize screening factor (CSF) is defined to be Beam/(Disp/64)1/3 . The CSF for an H23 is 2.37. Offshore sailboats should have a CSF of 2.00 or less. Thus, the Hunter 23 is a fast, light inshore racer, or a very fast, light inshore racer. Don't let anybody tell you any different!

Mast Length

Simon - I keep mine in the basement over the winter. I just measured it and it is 29'2" from the bottom of the base to the platform on the top of the mast (where the light is mounted). Hope this helps. GB

Wonder if This Would Work?

The mast for a 240 might be about right. Seems to be a very good price.

One more thing

I suspect the H240 mast might work, just make sure it's the right length for the H23. Your best bet is to contact US Spars after taking a look at their website. They have exploded mast and boom drawings for most Hunters and they are very helpful. Two masts are shown for the H23...you want the one that tapers above the forestay attachment. That's the "bendy" rig, which is lighter and more tunable than the constant section. There is one wrinkle. I've seen at least three different base castings (and consequently three different mounting plates on the coachroof) for the H23 mast. Take a picture of the mounting plate on the boat and e-mail it to US Spars so they can fit the base casting that matches your mounting plate. Last time I checked with US Spars, the base casting with the integral sheaves for the mainsail and spinnaker halyards was no longer available. If your base plate matches this casting, you may be out of luck. You'll have to order a new mounting plate to match one of the castings they have. Finally, when ordering standing rigging, make sure you order lengths that match your mast exactly. Do not rely on standard lengths the rigger or even the factory might have. Otherwise, the shrouds and stays may be too long or short to be adjusted by the turnbuckles. Good luck Peter H23 "Raven"

Answer not that clear

Simon, While I presume that Gary's measurement is good guidance, you should check the small boat (I used "masts" as the search term) archives for the period April, 2000. There was a string about masts, in which it was determined that Hunter put three different brands of mast on the h23. What we never asked each other was the lengths of each type, the type of deck attachment for each, the hight of attachment points and the hight, length and swept back angle of spreaders. I would have to endorse the idea of contacting a one of those manufacturers for a mast intended to go on the h23. It does have good acceleration and speed with a good suit of sails. Good luck and good sailing. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

My guess

My guess is that the 240 mast will be too short and that they might be able to cut down one of the 260 masts and modify it to fit. Their mast prices are great but the shipping on something that long will be very high.
