I see many brand new Catalina 309' on Yachtworld for around $105,000, however, since I have never bought a brand new sailboat before, my question is for those who have bought new:

I assume the price is negotiable, if it is, what is a fair price, 5%, 10%, more or less than the dealer asking price?

Several decades ago I was a dealer for a small sailboat builder. The gross profit was about 15 to 20%. If I wanted to settle for less... I could. After all expenses were met there was not much money remaining to call a net "profit." Often it was close to zero. Good thing I was also representing a major sail loft at the time. (Not that sails are that profitable, but the turn-around is a lot quicker and the selling process is easier.

Boat selling is a tough business. Luckily I was operating on a cash basis. Worse by far if you are undercapitalized and have to use bank flooring (i.e. a line of credit from the bank).

thirty some odd years ago i manufactured custom drive on boat trailers for boats in the 16 ft to 22ft range and if i sold one to a marine sales co for 450.00 dollars i would make about 45.00 to 35.00 dollars clear money and the dealer would mark them up to 600.00 dollars when selling a boat ....needless to say when the oil crises hit in the 70's i got out while the getting was good ....never could figure out how they made more on the trailers than i could other than the quanity was in my favor ....lol i guess i just needed a bigger truck:doh:

I have a network of salesmen to sell my product the runrocket. We whole sale them for $1000 and they sell them for $1700. They make $700 and I make $200 and my partner makes $200, after direct business related expenses. The benefit of owning the company is I have many salesmen. They only have one of themselves. But I guess if you are building the trailers yourself, you only have one of you too.
If a salesman makes 20% on the sale of the boat, I doubt very seriously the factory is making that even in the best of times.
