How Much Do / Should These Items Cost?

Looking at a used Beneteau 36.7 and would like to do some upgrades depending on what we can afford.

We were wonder what I should budget for the following items.

Dodger + Bimini
Roller Furling (Right now it has a double foil for racing)
Autohelm (Below deck) + Chartplotter
Air Conditioning (Heat/Air/Dehumidifier)

We offer great prices on furlers and custom biminis. An example is a rail mounted bimini with up to 12ft. beam x 5ft fore and aft length, backstay cut-outs and sailing window for $1281. These are built with name brand Sunbrella fabric and stainless steel tubing.

A Harken Cruising furler, unit 1 is $1305; you will have to add a toggle (around $55), a furling line and some lead blocks. If you do race, you'll want the double foil Harken MKIV for $1699.

Budget figures

Other than the dodger & bimini which usually aren't in catalogs, it's not too hard to figure budget prices for these items

Dodger + Bimini $2500 to $3000
Roller Furling (Right now it has a double foil for racing) what's the question? You want a new foil or a new system? New system $2500
Autohelm (Below deck) - Look in a WM catalog, don't know what you want $3000
+ Chartplotter same answer, a simple handheld GPS with plotter features is $300, full bells & whistles is $3000
Air Conditioning (Heat/Air/Dehumidifier) - two units or one? you have to do some homework first, but figure $3000 to $5000

Those are starter #s. Some clients ask me: how much per square foot or how much to build a new building? I answer: hospital or office building? These are budget figures, as are Dave's because just listing all these things gets you ranges of costs, but no closer without first figuring out in more detail just what you want. The more detail the lower the costs usually get. You know, just like shopping at costco or Safeway: Honey, get some soda! OK, what kind and a six pack or a flat...

Unless you are getting the boat dirt cheap. Look for another boat that has air and all the other items you want. Used boat market is depressed and you should be able to find one with out going through the time and problems retrofitting.

Using Stu's numbers you are looking at $10 - $15k. It depends on when you want the upgrades. If you want them now, Shell could be right in looking for another boat that has these on it. Best to find the best boat for you within your budget. You can add the upgrades as you go.

Good Boats Sail Good Too...

My chase for a boat comes is derived from 1) Keeping my sailing partner happy 2) Keeping me happy (I prefer to go faster then the other boat) 3) Keeping more of my money in my pocket.

Nevertheless - I/we could spend more on an Island Packet/Sabre/Dufour/Wauuiez..etc but in the end...we are happiest just floating on the water.

This statement may seem like I'm a heretic, but your boat selection is a "good" boat, not a "better" boat! In one of your earlier postings you provided budget information regarding your available funds to purchase a sailboat. For what it's worth older "better" is better than newer "good"! That's my 2 cents!

The 36.7 is and one design race boat with some creature comforts and its unlikely you will be finding one setup with more comfort stuff

Depends on custom or pre-designed. I would guess a dodger for this boat would be about $3500-4000. The bimini would be about $2000-2500. Roller furling jib would be $1200-2500 plus installation. Below deck auto pilot is probably $3500 plus installation. I have no idea about heat/AC. You can save several hundred dollars if you can install some items yourself.

look for pre owned goods---cheaper and still use able.....lol goood luck...there is ebay and craigs list and local flea markets for marine gear---why pay retail plus 400 or more percent LOL.

Doubtful that you will find a dodger & bimini on the used market. If you do, they will probably be garbage.

The autopilot is something that you can usually find the individual parts for and many of them aren't new but may never have been used. I purchased my drive unit and control head on ebay and ended up with a new course computer. I saved about 1/2 on the total price.

Heat/AC is not something I would purchase used. Many a sailor have had enough problems with new ones let alone used.

A friend of mine has the Beneteau 367 and was looking to put a bimini on it for cruising. The main sheet and track on the B367 is in front of the steering pedestal. The distance from the sheet to the backstay is only a couple of feet at the most. It became obvious that sailing with the bimini up would mean a very small unusable bimini. The dodger should be no problem though.

You're partially right gghost, but our bimini does cover the helmsman and the 2 aft seats, so it is functional despite the main sheet and low boom.

there are many used biminis that are without any problem--old wooden boats with decent canvas and decent stainless framing donot survive long..there is nothing wrong with them. many times a wooden power boat will sink partially and the topsides are above water--these are the pieces which need new homes. there are many bits and pieces available for the seeker----just have to have an open mind and goood eyes.....there are also bits from folks who wish to change the color of their canvas as it is no longer suitable---these folks discard stuff without any sense of conscience---is just junk to them---these bits may just be 2 yrs old--still able to be used for another 10 yrs without problem. could even fit the frame you have in your possession---measure and discover there are alternatives to paying retail plus 400 percent LOL....never pay retail.....is not necessary---i like finding pirelli tires with the nibs still on them in junkyards lol.....my mind is open to thinking outside the box.....have fun......
