How much bottom paint for a Hunter 23.5

Todd, If I remember right, I could paint my Cal 24 with one quart per coat. I may have used part of a quart but for sure I would buy three quarts each year and put on two coats. But that was thirty years ago. Interlux has a very good painting guide that suggests quantities for size of boat. They probably have that on their web site. Dave

Here is a formula
Here is a formula from the Super Ship Bottom website, in how much of their paint to use. Not sure how accurate this is. Probably no more than ball park. Length x beam divided by 375 equals amount of paint needed in gallons per coat. When I last did my 28, I used a gallon of Trinidad, and had plenty. Will depend somewhat on the paint you choose. But a gallon is probably much more than you need. Not sure a quart will do it.

one gallon
My 28 foot Cal needs exactly 1 gallon which left a few ounces for the staff to touch up where the boat stands were ( I just leave the almost empty can with an old brush under the boat and they touch it up and toss the brush). Easy to do if prepped properly.

Not being sure how much paint to buy and knowing that Thibodaux, a close friend who had the same size boat had recently painted his, he gave him a call. I'd like to offer my own formula
for figuring how much bottom paint it takes for one coat of bottom paint: Waterline length x max beam x .85 Theoretically, calculating my H28.5 produces about 230 sq ft. I find a gal of bottom paint covers around 400 sq ft. This works out just about perfectly in practice. I save the remaining paint, buy another quart, and I'm ready for next year. FYI, if you buy and use an annual ablative paint, I would only use one coat of paint and apply it with a 1/4" roller, not the recommended 3/8" roller.

Excess not Bad
A gallon would usually do 2 coats of my Mac 26. Any left over can be applied as extra coats to the waterline. 2 gallons did my Pearson 323. Again it is much better to have a little too much. A third coat along the waterline is not a bad thing. Note!!!!! I have saved a lot of paint by putting the roller and brush into a couple of plastic bags and then putting them into the freezer. The paint doesn't dry out and the brush and roller can be reused. Rollers hold a lot of paint and cost money. Win Win!!!
