thanks in advance. I anchor in 35-50 ft with winds up to 30-35 knotts in the channel islands. I currently have 75ft chain 200ft nylon...however in 35+knott winds it is not fun to see the nylon thin out like a rubber band ready to snap. Dragging has not been a problem....just peace of mind. If I were to have all chain how much weight/chain can I place in H36/356 locker. Any suggestions welcomed. Thank you, abe

Abe, what is the diameter of your nylon...

rode? As long as it is in good condition and the right size for your boat, not to worry about it breaking IMHO. Also, what size of chain, 5/16th? And grade proof coil, BBB, high test (grade 40), grade 70? Unless you anchor in coral where abrasion would become an issue, my choice is the 200 feet of nylon connected to the 75 feet of chain that you have. We always use a kellet at the shackle that joins the rode to the chain to help with catinary. As far as your question about weight in the bow, that again depends on your intended anchorages and the scope you want to achieve to meet the expected conditions. If you really want all chain then I recommend that you consider grade 70 in a smaller size chain to help reduce the overall weight but still retain the strength. In doing so, if you have a windlass, you will need to convert it to handle the smaller links. You may have some difficulty finding a supplier that can get you galvanized grade 70. Terry

WLL's

5/16" H.T. (G40) Chain has a rated WLL of 3,900# (S.F. 3:1), or a breaking strength of 11,600#. 5/16" Bow Eye Shackle (Loose Pin) has a WLL of about 1,500#. 5/16" Chain 'Swivel' has a WLL of about 1,250#. 9/16" Nylon Rope has an approximate WLL of only 1,440# (S.F. 6:1), or a breaking strength of between 8,500# - 9,400# (premium).

200 ft if possible

abe, 200 ft of chain will not take a lot of room. It's surprising how little room it takes in the anchor locker. 200 ft will weigh about 170 lbs. If you are concerned as to how much this'll put your bow down have a 170 lb. friend (I'm sure this'll be easy to find) stand on the bow while you have a look. Splice 100' of nylon onto the chain. This should do you in most circumstances. Don't forget a snubber if you go the all chain route.
