How many Yamaha 33 were built?

No idea. I remember reading somewhere that the North American boats were exported primarily to the West coast of the US and Canada but I don't recall a number. I was surprised to see one in the Great Lakes. There was one for sale in Maryland a few years back. They're not common.

Do you think we could figure this out from hull id numbers? The first 3 characters are the builder, the middle are the serial number and the last four digits are month and year. My 1978 Y33 was YAM000890278, so is it:
  1. YAM - Yamaha
  2. 00089 - SN
  3. 0278 - February 1978
The 33 went into production in 1976. Was mine the 89th boat?

I looked at another Y33 that had YAM000950478 - Compared to mine, hull #95 seems plausible. This might be way off track. I wonder if we could figure it out with a few more numbers. Maybe a 1984 boat number would answer the question.

My 83 is YAM330251083. 25th boat of October 83? Not likely. 25th boat of 83, maybe. How many overall? 2510? No idea.

Here are some more data points. These are boats I've owned or surveyed. I've added a space where I believe the date is:

1984 Y30 YAM30082 0484-84AJ2
1983 Y36 YAM36026 0983
1983 Y33 YAM33025 1083
1979 Y25 YAM00106 0478
1978 Y33 YAM00095 0478
1978 Y33 YAM00089 0278


Is it possible they changed numbering to reflect the model somewhere between 1979 and 1983??
  • Did they sequentially number all hulls without identify the model in the 1970's, then add a model designation later in the run?
  • Did my 36 come right after your 33? Or is it the 26th Y36?
Is that 1984 Y30 the 82nd after a serial number change? 1984 was near the end of productions.

I do love a puzzle. I hope there's no risk of publishing these numbers -They're not like a credit card, right? I'll delete the message if anyone objects. Google doesn't return useful or identifying results for these.

Most likely the 25th boat built period, this one built in October 1983.. so you'd be hull #25.

That might be low. They were in production from '78 to '84 (or later). As an '83, I would guess there were more than 24 boats before mine.

I think they used the dartboard method.

Ah, OK. I'm the third owner. It's been in Puget Sound since new.

Besides, I just put a diesel heater in and am almost done with the AIS install. I will NEVER get that money back so I'll just have to sail it off.

I just learned that the exceptional AIS Vesper XB8000 that has provided a safe passage for the past 7 years has been discontinued.

Damn Garmin...
