How many ties on you mainsail?

The winds for two days had been gusting above forty kts. There were only two torn sail covers and this was the only sail that had gone loose. I told Stan in the office and he said they had checked first thing and all seemed well but they would send somebody down to secure it.If you dont like my answer Ross, ask a better questionNone! Who knows.. they might have been going for shade.

I had a pedestal cover that was difficult to install over the wheel and folding table and was double-tied. One day of continuous 35 kt winds gusting to 50 kts and the line gremlins untied and removed the cover and it was never seen again. The wind and its' accomplices can undo the best efforts and preparations of the best seaman.
I use 4 'sail-ties' that clip together and cinch tight rather than knot together on a 10' boom and a sail cover that uses twist through attachments. I hope it stays put through the winter. I check it daily.

Actually, on my boat we don't use sail ties... When I installed the new lazy jacks, we added a quick furling system to the boom. It consists of two shock cords running most of the length of the boom. One side has three section of shock cord—basically 10' split into three sections, and the other has the same, but each section has a shock cord hook on it... so to furl the mainsail and keep it on the boom—all you do is drop the main, reach over and grab the shock cord on one side and hook it to the cord from the other side. Keeps it bundled nicely and can be done far faster than using sail ties.

I use the same type of system on mine. Very convenient and you never forget to do it. On my previous Pearson 28, the cringle eyes on my main reefing points were big enogh that I could use the shock cords to tie my reef points when needed.Actually, on my boat we don't use sail ties...
It depends on which boom. The Main has 8 (16') plus some very good sailcovers. The Staysail and Mizzen have four each and sail covers.
Tim...That's not his only problem, does he normally leave his motor resting on the dock? That's gonna leave a mark

That way, he doesn't hasta worry about dropping any of the parts whilst changing a shear pin!
