How many of you sail scows or other small boats?

Sorry I have not been around this summer. Right when I was repairing my transom I got news that my mother was terminal with cancer everywhere that had been tested. I had to go to Texas and bring her to our home in Georgia to stay with us under Hospice care. During that time my older sister passed away at the age of 45. It has not been a great July. We did take my mom to St. Augustine with our camper and stayed in Anastasia so she could be near the ocean again.

Enough about all that. I have not been able to get to the lake or ocean to go sailing but yesterday we went to the yacht club and rigged our Johnson scow. Not enough wind to make her scream but I did have a run where I had to lay out and I came up to tack and she went right over. Was very easy to right. This was the first time I have taken her out. A friend asked me if I wanted her. What a fun boat to get out and sail.

Anyone else have a small sailboat they like to play on besides their large boat?

Was just sitting here very tired after an afternoon on the lake thinking what a weird July this has been. The wind has been blowing, everything is green, and we wear long sleeves in the evening. But I would not trade for your July Bill although I have had more than one year like that.

I am tired because I was on my small one-design in way too much wind. We have a little gathering of Flying Scots and Highlanders on Sunday afternoon. I got there early and was determined not to fly more than the jib, especially since I was alone. Then the others showed up with crews, struck their mains and the race was on. I have never worked so hard nor come so close to dumping her. I had ten feet of boom and the entire foot of the jib in the water! An old racing buddy says there are 600 buckets of water in a Highlander. Thankfully I still don't know.

Welcome back

Very sorry to hear about your Mom and your Sister. It makes me feel thankful to have my Mom. We lost my Dad last fall and my Mother put off a procedure that later revealed that she needs major surgery. I fly down a week from Monday and the surgery is Wednesday. She has been a pain the butt to deal with...not following up with Doctors to get the surgery scheduled...fighting with her Sister...etc... Thankfully I have my Sister to share my mental pain as well.

I am glad that you got out for a sail. I have been keeping my eyes open for a small boat...although I am sure my Wife would not be happy about it!

Small Boats

I am so sorry about your Mom, and Sister.

Sailing a small boat has great way to clearing your mind of all else, while really enjoying life and nature. I learned to sail in a Moth scow, and still fly a Sunfish on our vacations to the Thousand Islands. The great thing about these boats, and the Johnson scow you sailed is hat they are all easy to haul on a trailer without a truck!

I still have my Precision 13. My son and I sailed it on the Maumee River last Sunday. Small boats are great fun.

Scows !!!!!!

Used to race M16s & M20s. Currently converting M20 to I20. Scows .... LUV 'em.

This little boat actually has me itching a little to get a Snipe, Laser, or E-scow so I can race in their regattas. Our yacht club is the sponsor for the Georgia Snipe Championships but those little boats are very pricey. A laser is much easier to get into. E-scows are nice but I do not know of any associations or regattas for them around here.
