Went out sailing yesterday on a beautiful Feb. day and started thinking how many miles do I sail in a year? I am going to reset my plotter the next time I leave the dock and see how far I sail this year. How many miles do you think you sail in a year?

10 nm from my berth to GG Bridge, 20 nm there and back, once a week, 52 weeks a year = 1,040 plus outside the Gate trips and to the Delta, add 200 miles. Less than 2,000. Not so much but a lot of boat use.

I'm lucky to get 5 good months on our little lake. Beer Cans = about 10 miles, average weekend sail is about 20 miles of zigzagging back and forth. Probably 400-600 in a good year, wishing it was more.

We had plans for more miles last year. Only made 1500 nm. A couple of trips to Galveston at 35, a trip to Port Lavaca at 48, and a trip to Pensacola at 550 one way.

Short season up north . . .

Limited by a five-month season and the Admiral still has one of those full time J.O.B. things.

834 nm with 32 nights away from the slip.

About 6,000 I guess. Florida to Tunisia. Next (this year a little less - maybe 1/2 that or just over)

Last year I sailed my C-400 from Key West to Mexico, back to Key West, north to CT and back to Key West. You do the math... ;)

How about asking hours since may of us are day sailors because of the J.O.B. curse. I don't really know I just go as often as possible - 2+ times a week for a few hours on Lake Michigan, currently an cool 17 degrees.

Our best year was 2010 in our old C&C 24. We made just over 1,000 nm. Previous years ranged from as low as 250 nm to 600 nm.

In 2011, our first season with our new to us C310, my goal was 1,000 nm and we did about 600 nm. Our big trip was bringing the boat from Narragansett Bay to Hingham. We had a lot of weekends eaten up by some maintenance/repairs (exhaust elbow broke, battery charger went frying one of the batteries, the exhaust elbow lead to several other problems including having to be towed back to our slip for what ended up being a clogged air filter). Plus we were just getting to know the boat. We did spend almost every weekend on the boat and used it a lot more thanour previous boat.

In 2012, our second season with our C310, my goal was again 1,000 nm and we again did about 600 nm again but we essentially lived on board from April through November. Our big trip was down through the Cape Cod Canal to Cuttyhunk and the Vineyard. Weather was a big factor in keeping us from going far this year. Too many weekends had thunder storms predicted, some of which ended up being great with no storms. We cancelled many weekend trips to places like P-Town, Gloucester, the Isle of Shoals, etc. because of weather predictions. Instead we would stay local and drop the hook off of Grape Island, Peddock's Island or in World's End. Most of these trips ended up with us rafted up with friends overnight, which was a lot of fun. We got a lot of great use of the boat but not as many miles under the keel as I wanted.

For 2013, I am not setting a goal. I just want to spend as much time on my boat as I can. Hopefully the house will be sold and we will be full-time live aboards. I will get a night sail to P-Town in this year. I will also get to the Ipswich River again. Our big trip may be to Maine this year.

Fair winds

Sailing for the past five years on Georgian bay from May to October. Surprisingly each year we have logged very close to 1100 nm give or take a few. Dream of the day the boat is in a climate that the season can be extended year round.

Well, We have been averaging around 1100 to 1200 miles a year for the last couple of years. I reset the counter when we splash the boat in the spring and sail till the snow falls. The Admiral still goes out to work to pay into my SS check and when I can get her to give up that silly notion of working, we'll head south and look for Captain Ron.

No Bad Days...

2,700. nm. With the Exploradores Marinos (Sea Scouts) and guest. What a joy it is to share with our young people in Nicaragua (www.sailingnicaragua.com) and have so much fun with guest showing them the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Sailing on "No Bad Days" (all year) is a super way to give back and enjoy your stay in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua... www.parkavenuevillas.com is the sponser and place to stay when you come.

About 1500 nm in and around the SF bay... probably about the same next year, plus perhaps a 10-day somewhere else.
