how many hits in a day on this site? i was visiting the cape dory site and they say the received 500,000 yesterday. thanks

Doubt it!
Craig: I would doubt that they have had 500,000 hits in their existance let alone a day. This is probably more hits that Microsoft gets in a day. Cannot even imagine what kind of a statistic this may be.

SERIOUSLY doubt it...
There can't be more than a few thousand Cape Dorys around, seems very unlikely that ALL of the owners visited the site hundreds of times yesterday. Web stats can be made to say pretty much anything you want, "hits" can mean anything from "unique visits" to counting each individual file including every tiny little .jpg file that gets downloaded when you go to a page. Loading one page may cause lots of "hits" in other words. "There are lies, damned lies, and then statistics..."

Also, beware of the term hits vs. page views. A page with five graphics on it creates a total of six hits each time it is requested (1 request for the page plus five requests, one for each graphic). That definition can be used to inflate traffic stats. Our combined sites (all brands) generate page views in the millions... but each month, not each day.

Red Worms
There have been sites all over the internet that have been flooded with red-worm hits. If the number is from a regular counter, any virus type of IP flood could have artificially cranked that number up. dc
