Does anyone know how many H23's were built/delivered? SailboatData.com doesn't have that figure. My recently acquired '87 is hull # 1228 and they were built until 1992 so there must be a bunch!

Actually produced in late 1984 till 1992. What year is your boat or better yet your hull number would be better. I bought the last one as a dealer. My 23.5 replaced it.

Need your hull number as your boat is the 228 made to be sure. If you are not willing to give complete hull number I will not respond as that will tell me for sure
Ok Dave, I did not realize you needed the entire registration #. It is: HUNA1228E787. The original owners manual from Hunter that came with the boat states it as: Model - Winged, Size - 23, Hull # 1228. Hope this helps you to determine how many were built.

The first 10 of this model were swing keels with winglets on them. Then they came standard with the wing keel.
The model year changed every August 1. For example a hull laid in July say July 15, 1987 would be model year 1987 but if they first laid the hull on or after August 1, 1987 the model year would be 1988.
The first hull of the 23.5 was laid in August, 1991 for model year 1992 with the first leaving th factory in the same month. I have a picture. However there were some 23 wing keels still in the pipeline in August thus the model year 1992.
I first showed the 23.5 boat in August 1991 with folks at Smith Mountain Lake to folks as far away as Canada to Florida and the Midwest due to my involvement with that boat. Following that weekend I called Hunter To report contracts made. I said we have a problem as I explained a little over 30 contracts that they needed to ramp up production. Most of the dealers I knew I called and advised of their area customers whom I sold turning those contacts over to them.
To answe your question how many 23’s were built a figure of 1100-1200 made but that was long ago. Hunter had to build several hundred to see any profit. I cannot remember exactly how many as I am much older now.
Warren Luhrs who owned Hunter was a dear friend who always listened to my hair brain ideas. When sailing solo around the world he was provided with Franklin County sparkling mountain peach brandy from them thar hills!

I feel very lucky to have received the original owner's manual with the boat, though it has changed hands several times over the years. Also included was a type-written, numbered check list for setting up and launching by the original owner. An interesting read.

Second photo identifies the dealer as Inland Yacht Sales and Service Inc., 745B North 123 Bypass, Seguin TX 78155.
I think it is quite remarkable that the hull for this boat was laid in May of '87 and the finished boat was delivered, 2000 miles away on June, 18.
It did not take much time to build a small boat vs a large one. I wish you could have seen that as I did.
Catalina still building boats as well as irwin in Florida and tartin- c&c. Or W.D.Shock in California I'm sure you could e-mail and arrange a tour. after they come out the mold the specific specialtys jump in and knock there part out quick. Trim carpenter's. cabinet guy and electrician probably spend 4 hours on small boat vs couple days on a 40+ boat
