.I'm thinking of going with Micron Extra or the West Marine equivalent PCA. It will be the base coat over bare gelcoat. Will I be able to get two coats from a gallon? Will one gallon be enough?Any help is appreciated.
Last year we really cleaned the hull of Whiskey Girl and put one coat of red and two coats of blue Trinadad SR on her. Took 3 qts of red and 6 qts of blue. When we hauled her, it was noticable the the leading and trailing edge of the keel were almost bare, so we put an extra coat (just a paintbrush wide) on those sections. Probably overkill, but we had an extra day out so it could dry, and the extra paint.
.I just went and bought 1 gallon of PCA on sale for $70. If the one gallon is not enough I might get a quart or two more for the high wear spots. Thanks for the info
..to double the keel and rudder edges and an extra layer along the waterline. One suggestion.... since you're putting this over bare gelcoat I recommend you read manufacturer's instructions regarding surface preparation. I'll wager you'll need some type of de-waxer and primer treatment to insure good adhesion. If you don't prep it right you're wasting money no matter what kind of paint you've acquired.
I owned a 27 for 14 years and did three bottom jobs using one gallon for two coats. It was always a stretch and did thin the first cost with just less than a quart. I suggest going with one gallon and a quart for enough extra to have at the end for stand patches and keel bottom. Move your jack stands for each coat. Note as previously mentioned to spend the extra care in prpe at the water line and add a third coat over that small width of area. As recently posted - first bottom jobs can be a failure if the waxes etc arenot properly removed befor the first coat. Also research new products and methods for barrier coats on new gel coat surfaces. Good luck.
