Always a backup

It never hurts to have a backup. We have a pedestal mounted Raymarine C70, and Keep a handheld Garmin GPSMap76 as a backup (and spare batteries because the thing eats them). We also keep a handheld VHF radio aboard.

Two on board

I have an old Garmin with all kinds of routes plotted on it - Ive done some realy stupid things with it in fog, and survived. My backup is another handheld, and doesnt hold a signal nearly as well as the old Garmin 48

gps backup

My handheld little Garmin 45XL saved our hull when the Raytheon plotter took a dump in Mexico a few years ago. It guided us up the west coast of Baja and through the southern entrance of Bahia Todos Santos, (Ensenada) in the dark with a misty rain falling. I was very glad I'd bought that book of paper charts. Even today I use the Garmin to backup the Raytheon, which I found out has a software glitch. You can't have too many backups.
