I'm about to purchase a 1985 Catalina 36. Just had it surveyed today, and the bottom showed some blistering, though the surveyor said there had been a barrier coat applied. One side was almost clean, but the port side had maybe 80 osmotic blisters on it, most of them the size of a shirt button, but about 15 of them silver dollar size. Trying to decide how much of a problem this will be down the road. Would love any advice. Robert N.

There have been many posts on this. Some people consider those blisters to just be cosmetic and others think they are a major problem. You can have a surveyor tell you how much it would cost to repair the blisters and then deduct that from your offer. You could also just keep looking, there are lots of boats. Blisters are not uncommon.

You can fix them!

Newt. Blisters are pretty commonplace and more prevelent in fresh water (temperature and density). What your saying regarding number would be an easy fix in a do-it-yourself yard. A couple of days to do it. Their is a ton of stuff on the web on doing blister repair. I took care of over 700 on my Hunter 25.5 before I sold it and repaired a dozen on my Catalina 30 ('88). Most folks back off when it comes to repair, but it was easy. It took PATIENCE and the right equipment. Many came forward in the yard to help with direction. I opted during the survey to keep the boat in the yard at time of sale to get everything done. I personnally would get them repaired before getting back in the water if your in that position. They can get larger and they can get more expensive to repair down the road. Best of luck Bob
