Being a fairly new owner of a swing keel 22, it seems to take an awful long time to get the boat set up once I arrive at the launch ramp. As much as 90 minutes! How does it take for most trailering owners? Is there a particular proceedure that could be followed to cut the time? Also, how do most owners deal with the shrouds when it's time to lower the mast and go home? I've ended up just carefully coiling everything up and stuffing the coiled forestay and foreward lowers into a big bag and fastening it to the top of the cabin until I can get the boat home and tidy things up. I also use a LOT of bungie cords. There's gotta be a better way! What am I doing wrong?

tricks

Hello, Last year I trailer sailed a C22. I learned a number of tricks to make it faster / easier, but it's never going to take 15 minutes. With practice, we were able to go from arriving at the marina to having the boat in the water and ready to sail in 1 hour. Some tricks (in no particular order): 1. make / buy / get a mast crutch. This way the top of the mast is supported while the base of the mast is placed in the step and bolted. 2. Replace all cotter pins with either split rings (better) or push pins (best). The push type pins take only a second to install and then the shrouds and forward lowers are DONE!. 3. Ease tension on the backstay BEFORE you lower the mast. This makes installing the forestay a lot easier. 4. Roller furling headsail saves a lot of time. Make sure your headsail has UV protection and then you can leave it on when the rig is down. Put up the mast, and the headsail is ready to go! 5. We used to leave the mainsail on the boom and stow it in the cabin. 6. WE used to leave the rudder on the boat, but not the outboard. The outboard would get put on right before launch. 7. For the ramps we used, a trailer tongue extention (we used one from Extend A Hitch .com) make launch and recover a lot easier. 8. After trailer sailing all last year we put the boat on a mooring for this year. Much easier!!! Good luck, Barry

tricks and time

I agree with Barry, I would add I rid myself and the boat from all but a few bungee's and started using velcro to secure the shrouds and lines once the mast was down I start at the transom and work my way forward and use small diddy bags (REI) to secure the turnbuckles then using the velcro secure the bag. I also use a mast support at the tabernackle. There are quick releases available for the front shrouds that will trim a bit more time.
