Fellow Sailors, I have become aware the Yanmar YSM12 on my 30' Hunter has a thermostat. As a result it has to be opened by being brought up to temp prior to running antifreeze through it to insure the antifreeze gets to everywhere it needs to be for winterizing. As I have no temperature gauge on my boat (Only lights and buzzers which only sound as an alarm), how long will I have to run this engine to insure it is up to temp to allow the antifreeze to get proper circulation with the thermostat open? I had a 2QM15 without a thermostat on my old H30. To winterize the engine, I ran it in the slip at fast idle for 30 or more minutes and then ran the antifreeze through it. Without a temperature gauge you will have to feel some of the engine hoses to estimate whether the thermostat is open. Another option is to remove the thermostat and then winterize the engine. I used to change mine every two years so it was a routine operation. If your boat is on the hard already, you don't have many options about running the engine and removing the thermostat would be the best recourse.

Winter store the YSM12
To prepare the engine for winter. Pull the suction side hose of the raw water pump off of the through hull. Open the drain cock on the engine left side of engine (starboard boat)located low and midway back to tranny. Let all the water drain to the engine pan bilge. I screw the whole petcock out it is usually easier than trying to get the pet-valve to open. When all the water is out, teflon the threads and replace. Stuff a funnel in the suction hose going to the water pump and fill with anti-freeze. Start the engine and continue to fill funnel till the anti-freeze comes out the exhaust. I have done it this way for about 11yrs. now and have never had a problem. It does get cold in Michigan!!Use an anti-freeze that is Ok for aluminumn blocks. Good Luck!

Anyone ever tried draining the water, connecting the discharge hose to the mixing elbow to the suction of the pump and filling the anitfreeze through the motor zinc point then handcrank or run the engine for a minute or two? Just an idea, may not work though. I would hate to have deal with the cold ya'll do every winter. Around here it's actually better wind and more pleasant sailing from fall till spring.
