how is air getting into my fuel system?

I have been dealing with this engine studded problem that only happens after we are done with the day sail and motoring back to the marina. After a while the engine sputters and all but dies out. After a couple of minutes it clears itself and works normally.

I believe that air is somehow getting into the fuel system somewhere but I have no noticeable fuel leaks.

Any idea on where to investigate?

Thanks,
Matt

I had the exact problem for a couple of seasons. Discovered that the fuel line from the primary filter (attached to the stbd side of the engine) had become brittle and dry. The result was air was drawn in and the engine would sputter and die. I replaced all fuel lines from Racor secondary to injector pump a couple of years ago and have not had problems. I am planning on replacing the remaining fuel lines at the end of this season.

Thanks, I will inspect the condition of the fuel lines and probably also do the filter rebuild kit that Paul mentioned.
