How Important Are Zincs In Fresh Water ........

.........for a slipped sailboat?

Getting ready to do the bottom paint, and I see driving down the highway one fell off the shaft. I just ordered a new one.

It used to be a pacific ocean sailboat, but she is headed for a small lake in Nebraska.
My docks have power and water, and I am just trying to get my head around the zinc issue.

If there is power at the docks the zincs are important.

Don't use zincs however, use magnesiums for fresh water.

Zincs work in fresh water. Magnesiums may be better, i don't know, but use something if there is AC current in your marina.

According to the Martyr website, as well as West Marine both say the same. Zinc in salt water, aluminum in brackish water and magnesium for fresh. According to the martyr website, zinc and aluminum get an oxide layer that makes them ineffective. Magnesium works best in fresh, but will rapidly corrode in salt water.
