How heavy a dinghy can my boat carry on davits

We are new to sailing and are outfitting our boat.
We have a 32 foot hunter and wanted to buy a zodiac projet 350 dinghy to put on davits.
My concern is its heavy. How heavy a dinghy can my boat carry?
Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the davits. Also if they are after market, the installation is important. As the davit is as strong as the mounting points.

A 700# inboard dinghy on a 32 ft boat??? You might be able to find some davits and modify the bracing to hold it (barely) but you have little reserve for rough conditions and you will notably raise the center of gravity of your little sailboat. Look for a dinghy that you can take the motor off and that weighs max 100 lbs.

Well, I have Kato Davits on my 41 and I swing a 9'10" rib with a 9.8hp outboard. All up weight is 180#. And my davits have added bracing for the stern rail. There is no way on gods green earth that I would swing a 700# dink on the back of my boat. When I go off, I hoist the outboard to a stern mount to reduce the dynamic loading on the davits. That monster you are looking at will whip-saw side to side with 700# of inertia potential even with the optional strapping.

I just spoke at length with Kato, very helpful. Back to the drawing board.
Thank you, as I said we are new so thanks.

Is that a Zodiac 350 jet boat or not but I would not put that much weight on my bigger 2007 H-36 and as said that is a lot of weight not only on the Davits but your stainless rail would be put way past it's capacity for sure and sorry not a good idea for sure,
and not to mention that much added weight on the stern on your 32' and not to mention the swinging and what if nasty weather.
I would suggest a very good tow setup.

Just buy a power boat with its own lift davit; ride the "dink" on the 01 or foredeck; you're set. Might as well throw in a portable generator too. Geeze Louise!

The stern rail is not designed to support that kind of weight. There is a thing called "acceleration force" which would mean that as the stern of the boat goes up a wave and drops down the acceleration of the motion will increase the weight of the load. I would sure hope that the rail holds the weight load of a 250 lbs person beign thrown against the rail in foul weather but I would not place the holding ability of a rail at over 600 lbs.

Sorry I didn't realize JP was referring to a powerboat he wanted to hang off his stern. I just don't know the size and weight of Dink's off the top of my head. Damn you guys have a lot of knowledge.

I have a similar size boat (336) with ocean marine davits and an Achilles 315 LX. The boat weighs about 130#, about 230# +/- with gas and motor (9.8hp). It handles fine. I've had it out in 4-6' short period seas, and while I don't recommend that, there was no observed flexing and only about 1" side to side motion. I don't think id go much heavier, but wanted to share a data point. It does drop the stern about an inch when on the davits.

Every davit manufacturer gives a max load for their davits, but even more critical is how they are attached to the boat. I seriously doubt that there is enough structural strength to fasten davits rated at 500# like ours to the stern deck of most production monohulls. It would probably require some structural reinforcement of the whole stern to carry that much weight if one considers the torque and the stresses of the dink being tossed around by the boat's motion.
A smaller, lighter dink will be a lot more fun and a hundred times more realistic, especially when you need to beach it or unbeach it after the tide has dropped a few feet. No way you could roll a 750# dink over on the beach to clean the bottom and I for one wouldn't enjoy laying on my back under a trailer cleaning it.
If speed and stability are what you are after, my Zodiac Mark 1 Classic with a 15hp 4 stroke will top out at about 35 knots with one aboard and just a few knots less with 2. With 4 adults and their gear it will still get up on a plane w/o any effort.
At about 225# it's OK to haul up on the beach, and isn't a huge strain on our davits, though we do not use them when sailing offshore, preferring to store it on deck forward. Unlike most out here, I do not like RIB's, preferring the lighter, larger load carrying capacity of a soft bottom with alloy floorboards, which I can roll up and stow below should I wish.
I do think you were on the mark with Zodiac. We love ours and it has held up really well in 6 years of hard, daily use in the tropics.

Hi Jen, you seem set on davits, however, I really dislike them. Interferes with the transom, expensive, heavy and more holes in the boat. The following link shows how we carry our nine foot dink and the same way we carried it on our H28. Never an issue after sailing many thousands of miles all over PNW waters and in all kinds of wind and sea states. Also dislike towing the dink; drag, breaking loose, etc. FWIW.
