Want to install refigeration on my HUnter H290. Dealer wants $1800.00 Plus (Only guy in area, got a monopoly). The ice box is appox. 5.5 CU/FT. 17" wide x 15" with 2 1/2" thick walls. There is a shelf 17"X6", 12" down from the top. How hard to install, what unit to use and what to do? Really big thanks.

I put a system on my 320, and it wasn't too hard. I built a shelf under the starboard locker in the main salon for the compressor to sit on, and then just drilled and ran the lines (that takes two people, and it helps if one can be double jointed.) All told, it took about 12 hours, and other than the shelf, it looks like a factory install. I would suggest no matter how does the install that you get some hot water pipe insulation for the lines from the box to the compressor. It keeps the condensation down, and will cool a little faster. If you need specific details on the install, let me know.

For less than 900.00, you can have a complete system delivered to you. (Shipping Included) and install it yourself. Small evaporator, Small Air cooled condensing unit if you have space for airflow. If not, go with the water cooled unit. If you call frigoboat, they have some year end deals. Pricing is going up the 1st of the year and it would make good financial sense to take advantage of the additional discounts available.

Hate to be a pessimist but I am a firm believer in this type of work "If you have to ask, it's not for you!" Yes it can be done by people with good mechanical skills, but as you heard even with that it takes a long time. Have to have mechanical, electrical, and carpentry skills.

Dan, Hunter has chosen the Adler Barbour Coolmatic series refrigeration as an option on the 290. It consists of a CU-85 condensing unit with a VD-15 forced air evaporator. The evaporator has a built in fan which circulates the air in the box for more even temperatures top to bottom. They also draw the temps down faster than conventional evaporators. The system is quite easy to install as well. The only thing required you may not have in your tool box might be a 1 1/2" hole saw. The system can be purchased and delivered for less than $700.00 from any of the major catalogs or retailers.

Don, I will send my contact info shortly. Dan, Gary has a good point regarding the fancoil unit. They are easy to install as are most dc conversion kits and would, by design, offer a rapid temperature pull down. Just bear in mind that this is an off cycle defrost system, which means the evaporator temperature is, by virtue of the thermostat, brought to a high enough temperature that can cause the box temperature to rise to an unacceptable temperature if not monitered properly. I would suggest that you be certain that the evap. temps will be stable with such a unit.The term "off cycle defrost" is virtually non-existant these days. In the commercial refrigeration world, this evaporator defrost cycle is accomplished with defrost heaters, defrost termination thermostats, hot gas defrost, etc. This is not practical with a dc system, hence the off cycle defrost. There is some excellent educational info regarding this subject out there and i would urge anyone considering this style of evaporator to do their homework before being subject to what may possibly be unsatisfactory and unhealthy refrigeration temps.

Thanks for the info so far. Want to know how to run the electric wire to the unit? Under the deck or over head track. Do you put a cut out in the settee for air flow? I do have the skills and tools to install.

The wiring should be run where it will not be damaged. If youbring the wire to the terminal strip from below, it will help to create a drip loop. This will help prevent any water running into the electronics. You do want to cut a vent hole in the settee to exhaust the warm air. Cover it with a vent that matches to the interior. You can find a large selection of vents and grills at www.boatac.com

Bill has a valid point concerning self defrosting fan coil evaporators in freezer applications. However in refigerator applications, the VD-15 works excellent. Just ask a 290 owner who has one. Hey Bill, give me a call next time you're in town. Lets get together with Sam Adams at the CT.
