Just bought an Oday 272LE with the Westerbeke engine. I plan on driving this about 60nm from where it is now to my home port. Hope to sail most of it but depending on weather and such may have to use the engine for a significant portion of the trip. Any opinions on approximate speed under power in still waters? Just trying to estimate how long this trip will take.

You know the story.... depends on the current, tide, wind and other uncontrollable influences... having said that, the 272 that we owned would easily do 5kts. on avg. However, a stiff breeze on the nose or against the current/tide will net you around 4.2 to 4.6 its.. My experience... 1986 272 LE with a 10hp 'beke
Great info all thanks. My sail is on long Island in NY. About 1/3 of it is almost due east, then once I round Orient point the remainder is almost due west. Winds are generally E to NE to N. If I get a good northern wind I can sail easily on the long leg of the trip. But if we have an easterly wind we'll motor going west. This gives me an idea of total time since this is the first real trip we are taking in this boat. Estimating 12-15 hrs. Thanks again for the info.

An 'ERLY' wind (like Easterly) indicates the direction the wind is blowing FROM, not TO. So sailing west in an easterly would be downwind, not upwind as your post alludes. Pretty sure you meant westerly.

Hey Craig. Mickey from O'Day Facebook group. Plan on 4 kts. Anything better is a blessing. Get a copy of the Eldridge Tide book (West Marine stocks it, or Amazon) and plan your trip with favorable currents. Watch yourself rounding Orient Point, go at slack or flood, don't fight an ebb current there. After Orient you may want to lay up in Mattituck. From there plan 4 hours to Mt Sinai.

Thanks for the pointers. We are planning to get out of Peconic with the outgoing tide and round Orient at slack. We were basing the trip on 4 kts. we figure anything more is just good luck.
You absolutely should catch the outgoing in the Peconic, slack at Plum Gut and the incoming in the Sound. You can certainly buck the tide but it will turn a pleasant trip into a slog. I've gone from Mattituck to New Suffolk in a day several times. Mt. Sinai is another couple of hours. Mattituck is a pleasant place to stop. There is an anchorage at the head of the creek and it's walking distance to restaurants.
