how far off shore have you gone?

how far off shore have you taken your 27? has anyone ever crossed the atlantic or circumnavigated? has anyone ever sailed to bermuda? how about down thru the panamal canal and to hawaii? bahamas,bvi,south america? and did you have radar? just curious for future info.thanks

Most Hunter 27 owners are smarter.

WB:Most of the owners on the Hunter site are wiser than trying to do most of these passages with this type of boat. Could you make it, Sure. Why wouldn't you do it? Where would you want to start. Maybe the Bahamas (one day at sea) and you pick your window. The rest of these are going to take several days off shore and you never know what is going to happen.

Good Question

We just sailed out to Cape Lookout and I would like to go farther- in another boat! Our 27's could go blue water but water and fuel limitations beg us to reconsider and use her for coastal forays. I retire from the Navy in 14 years and I have my eye on a Hallberg-Rassy 36 Center cockpit at the moment. Her fuel/water is 90/110 gallons! I plan to sail "LOTUS" down to Charleston,SC next summer and plan on being out of sight of land in the Atlantic. I am sure your query will find someone who has sailed across the Atlantic though.Cheers!

Florida to Mexico

Not me, but Tom Manalili says he makes this run pretty much yearly. See his boat review for the way he strengthened his Cherubini h27 for an ocean crossing. As I understand it, the design will do just fine, but careful preparations to strengthen and waterproof the hull, openings, and rigging are key. Of course, you have to find a way to carry enough fuel and water, and provide the needed communications. As I understand it, any Hunter model would require similar preparations. I refer to a post in the archives from a h45 that crossed the Pacific and reported the mods he did before making the run. They were very much like Tom's.What about us? We have taken the Lady Lillie, our h27 across Lake Erie which means we have been 20-25 nautical miles from shore a number of times. Our use can definitely be characterized as coastal cruising.David
