How far does a tank of gas take you?

Looking to buy an outboard for my Mac 25. How long does a given O/B motor go on a gallon of gas? Looking at the Mercury 6.0 and 9.9 4-stroke. Here in Cali, I'd like to motor out in the early morning to fish before the winds come up around 11am. Wondering how much HP is needed to reach hull speed, and how much gas is used? Much appreciated!

Rule of Thumb

A very rough rule of thumb is that a gasoline engine will burn 1/10 to 1/15 gallon of gas per hour per horsepower. Therefore at full throttle, your 9.9hp, call it 10hp, will burn 2/3 to one gallon per hour. That is at full throttle, only. Judging when it is, for example, at 1/2 throttle almost impossible.

Is 10 HP too much?

Thanks Dan. How much horsepower is needed to reach hull speed in calm conditions? Is there a difference between motoring with the keel up rather than down? Appreciate the response.

Another rule

The 1/3 rule. A third out. A third in, and a third in reserve. I have a new 9.9 Yamaha on my Mac 25, and I just put a 10 gal tank, and I am esitmating that I should be able to get about 200-250 miles depending on current, head wind, and how much throttle. Another example, my dad has a 36' Gemini, with 2-9.9hp Yamaha and 50 gals of fuel, and he gets about 500 miles out of that, but his boat is 9600 lbs. Hope this helps a little Here comes Santa!!!

Fuel

I have a 9.9 Honda on my Mac 26D. With the daggerboard up half way and the engine running at 3/4 throttle I am able to get 7 knots and can run like that for four hours on 3 gallons of gas. Hope this helps you.

Keel/Dagger Board Position

On my MAC 23, it will go about 6mph with the keel down and 7mph with the keel up. I notice that Gary's 9.9 hp at 3/4 throttle or 7.5hp is using about 3/4 gal/hour or 1/10 gal per hp per hour, although I am not sure that 3/4 throttle is the same as 3/4 power.
