other 12 wet water
removehtml] I'm moving Mistico, my 31 ft Allmand to a lake in another state. Her bottom has not yet been painted by me in the three years I have owned her. Squeegeed her a few times though. She has been in lake water for some 10 years that I know of. How many coats of paint are on her now? I have no idea. What kind of paint is on her now? I have no idea. My questions are. Do I just sand her bottom and add another layer of bottom paint? Or do I sand her bare and paint her clean bottom? It's been suggested I should do a pressure wash and a light sand and add another coat of paint. Now what kind of bottom paint do I add? What do you think? Any ideas? Any suggestions? Thanks Keep it up, CtskipError: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

Depends

CTSKIP, It kind of depends on what is on it now. If it has an ablative paint on it, you probably don't have a large build up, and you can't put ( I don't think ) a hard bottom paint on it. If it has a hard epoxy on it, you can put an ablative or another hard paint over it, but if it has a pretty thick build up, sooner or later it will have to come off. As for what kind of paint to put on it. Not at all up to date on what works in fresh water. For me, here on the gulf coast, I use Trinidad and love it. I get over three years on a bottom job, in an area that is pretty bad about fouling. By the way, I sailed an Almand 31 from Long Island down to Fl. couple of years ago. Really liked that boat. Very roomy for a 31, and very well laid out. I looked long and hard for one when I was boat shopping last year, but couldn't find a decent one.

That is what I would do.

Skip: That is what i would do. Just power wash the bottom, clean up any bad spots and hit it with another coat of paint. We usually have a second coat added around the waterline.

CTSkip, You keep her in fresh water how much

growth do you get in a season? If the existing paint is doing what it is supposed to do then just leave it be. When she starts to grow a beard then it is time to paint.

Bottom Paint

Ctskip-- I would have the bottom pressure washed. See what you have got. If there is a build up that seems excessive, get rid of it or just slop on a midified epoxy i.e WM Bottomshield, Trinidad. If there does'nt seem to be much build up get some WM PCA, Micron CSC, Micron Extra, Pettit SR. You can sand if you want to build up your muscles, I would just apply after a pressure wash. Ctskip...

Pressure wash... sand... then go to the Interlux web-site. They are very helpful on what goes over what... and what does not. If you don't know what is on there now... I am sure Interlux will reccomend a kill coat... before final application of a bottom coat. Might want to check with the new state. Here in Maine, Sebago Lake is the public drinking water for Portland... they frown on ANY bottom paint. Good Luck, Rich

I'll be hauling her out next week

if the lake is down to a acceptable level. The angle of the ramp dictates. After I have her on the trailer (a first for me), I'll power wash her and see how much of anything I have on her. I usually squeegee her twice a year whether she needs it or not. I haven't done her since mid July so I'll let y'all know how much of anything is on her. I really don't want to get down to the gel coat if I don't have to. Up in Ct, on my folks wooden boat, we use to use Trinidad. Sanding was the worst part. I'm glad those days are over. This fresh water preping is way differant. A whole lot easier too!! Nothing like the Long Island sound though. I sure do miss it. No barnacles. Nasty critters they are. Real knuckle busters. As for Mistico, 31 Allmand, she has more room and a better layout than some 40 footers I've been on. Good Old Boat did an article on her this last July. The interiors and options can make or break a boat, for sure. Mistico has about every conceivable option availiable at the time (1983). I'm really enjoying her. I don't know if I can bare watching her travel down the highway at 60 mph. Fearing the worst and praying for the best. Thanks for the input. I always like to triple check myself and I always question my moves several times before I pull the trigger. So thanks for the input. We sure do have a great bunch of great guys here and I hope that all know, that all are appreciated. Keep it up, Ctskip
