It sounds like navigating the upper Mississippi river. In places the channel is small enough that barge traffic is restricted to one direction at a time. On the bends there's no room for any other boat.
Our commercial barges will respond to pleasure craft calling for passing instructions, so they seem friendly. If you happen to get caught in the wrong place, there's nothing they can do to avoid you, so the smart skipper calls first.
Since my max speed is just slightly above the barge speed, it takes me several minutes to pass. There are few places on the river straight enough to give me the chance to pass, so I wait a lot.
You don't dare follow too close because their trust will knock your keel and rudder about.
