How does your club handle racing no shows

The rules at Olcott YC state that there must be two boats in a division for a race to take place. Situation: we have 3 divisions. If 2 divisions have enough boats to race, but one does not, do we cancel the whole race or race the divisions who have enough boats?

If we race the divisions with enough boats, do we reschedule a race for the one division that had only one boat show up?

We score a DNS as 1 pt + boats in the division. If only one boat in a particular division shows up, is it fair to that boat to reschedule? How many reschedules races can we run for a division that consistently only has one boat show up? If a division does not race and we score the race, the boat that shows up gets the same penalty as the boat that stays home unless we reschedule a race for that particular division.

Club racing is all about getting together and having a fun competition with your fellow club members. Everyone has reasons for missing a few races each season and the scoring should allow for everyone to have a few throw outs. This encourages folks to show for as many races as possible as it allows you to throw out a race that didn't go your way vs a race you didn't sail at all. Scoring has been done this way at several clubs I have been a member at.
As for the question about rescheduling of races, races should be run as scheduled for the folks who go to the trouble to show up ready to race and have been looking forward to doing so. Rescheduling should only occur when the conditions don't allow for racing. For the 1 boat that doesn't have a division to sail in consider allowing them to sail in the next higher division so they don't have to run the course alone, but still score them seperate. This way they get a score better than the boats in their division that didn't bother to show.

We run the race regardless of how many boats show up as long as they are registered for the series. The no-shows get DNCs. In our regattas we reserve the right to combine classes.

We once had a race that went well into the night with the wind dying. All but one boat dropped out so he could score some 1st place points. We have since set a time limit. But once a single boat has crossed the finish, it is considered an official race and any boat can stay out as long as they wish. We simply send the committee boat home at 8:30 and the boats that stay out take their own times when they round the finishing mark.

Once there are enough entrys for a division to be made who every shows up gets a start and the no shows get last place points

In are 10 race summer event you get two throwouts to allow for stuff like a no show

Casual racing...

Our club's Thursday night races are "casual races" with all in one "division" as you put it. We use PRHF ratings and take our own times.

Saturday racing is much more formalized with a committee boat, divisional fleet starts, and CBYRA PRHF ratings and scoring. No shows are a DNS. Racers must race 3 out of the five (or 4 out of the 6) seasonal race events to score points for the season.
