How does the water get into the bowl?

OK, for you engineer types (non communications types like me), on the S3213 water separator, how does the water get into the bowl?

Let me say what I think I do know so you can bypass that part and just get to the meat of things. I know the contents pass through the six holes on the top of the filter. Then the contents goes through the filter to the center and it then extracted so it can be used by the motor.

At the bottom of the filter there is a bowl. The fuel fills the center of the bowl but the outer side of the bowl is sealed with gaskets. The bottom of the filter has a plastic floor so I doubt any fuel or water gets into the bowl that way.

Let's hear your theory on how the water gets into the bowl so it can be drained with the drain plug.

Thanks

I always thought it was just because water was heavier hits the filter and drops out, but my answer is PFM.

i am sitting here thinking its the gravity as water is heaver than oil ....having said that its only logical that would be the case ....

i am not an engineer but i met one at the Holiday inn lounge one time back in the 60's....

I think I figured it out.

I believe the filter element is not attached to the canister housing. So the fuel and its contaminants enter the filter element from the canister side and work its way to the center of the filter element. As said above, water is denser than gasoline and gravity works to pull the heavier fluid down. Since the gas sits on top of the water it will always be at filter level until the water level rises forcing the gasoline to no longer flow.

That is purely SWAG! LOL

Yes the heaver water settles out due to it not flowing very fast in the "large diameter pipe" that is the filter and gravity. in the small diameter pipes it just gets carried along by the current. Your fuel tank is a very good water separator which would explain why rough seas cause fuel problems
Also see sediment bulb for similar fluid flows

its a straight thru shot from the tank to the bottom of the filter bowl. no actual filter media before the bowl.

as has already been said, water is heavier than fuel.... the fuel/water does not enter the filter media as in comes in from the tank,... it drops straight down into the bowl at the bottom of the filter and is the first place the fuel/water goes after entering the filter base....being that it is a larger volume area, the current flow slows down and allows most of the water to settle out.
then, as the bowl floods with fuel, it THEN enters the filter media.... and is strained as it leaves the filter for toward engine....
