How does one remove standing rigging at mast

Just stored my 89 Hunter 23 in Reno for the winter after a nice summer on Lake Tahoe CA. Noticed that the stainless cable had fatigued and fractured multiple strands of the standing rigging where it passes through the spreaders. It will obviously need to be replaced. However, it was not clear to me as to how one removes the upper part of the cable where it enters the mast. The upper part of the cable ends in a round edged "T" like peice of stainless. It did not slip out of the oval slot in the mast when rotated 90 degrees. There appears to be a hardened metal sleeave which sits inside the mast and is rivited into position. Despite trying to remove the terminal "T" of the cable in various positions I was unable to remove it. Does the sleeve need to be unriveted and removed and then replaced when removing the standing rigging attachment at the upper mast? When the rigger replaces the cable does he reuse the terminal "T" device, or is this a standard item which they cam easily reorder Thanks Alex 1989 Hunter 23 Lake Tahoe

standing rigging

Alex, there are different masts for the Hunter 23, on mine the piece that goes into the mast is J shaped( I think ) anyhow it just takes some effort to get it out, if it were in there loosley it would fall out when rigging, the J shapped piece is replaced when the rigger makes the new rigging, Mine had me help him , it is a simple process using a swagger, it presses the fitting onto the rigging, in the event that you have a different mast someone will arrive shorlty to advise you, hope this helps take care Mike

Remove the rivet

I had a similar problem this last spring with my '87 model. Following the advice on this board (see archives) I could not remove the cable by jiggling it out. I then contacted the OEM of the mast and they said there is a rivet that holds the assembly in place. I drilled it out and once removed, the rounded part holding the cable popped out real easy. Replacing the rivet is optional, because it just holds the piece in place while stepping the mast. I stepped the mast without riveting and it worked fine. As long the cable remains in any degree of tension it won't pop out of the mast. Good luck B

Needed help on toping lift halyard

I know that this post have nothing to do with my needs (my excuses), but help is needed on the toping lift. As you know the toping lift hold the boom mast from falling when the main sheet is retrieved or when you are going to reef. Happen to me, that last weekend was my first time out to sail. We raise the mast and everything else, but, we found out that no toping lift was there or installed. Facing the mast to port there is the main halyard which goes from the boom to the top mast and then down through the inner mast. This is for the main sail. Now the mast facing the bow there is another halyard supposedly for the jib (head sail) which also come down through the iner mast. I suppose that the toping lift is clam at the aft boom end and go up to the top of the mast and then down (down how?), since you are able to lift or manage the tension up-down of the boom. If any body can send me a graphic of the course of the topping lift, it will be highly appreciated. This web has manuals for the H23 but not too much as desire. Please e-mail me or contact me at: g.etchart@att.net and thanks for your help.

Topping lift path...

The topping lift comes down from the top of the mast to the sheeve on the port side of the boom. Through the boom to the lever lock on the port side of the boom at the gooseneck end of the boom. I believe it to be 1/4" line on my H23, perhaps 5/16".
