My fridge died on 110volt. It works on 12 volt. Anyone have an idea how these things work so I can fix it?

Why do you care about 110vac?

Why do you care about 110VAC? You have a battery and a charger so it can continue to operate in this mode until the compressor quits. There was a post regarding 110vac refrigeration systems in the last few months, so maybe you can get an answer in the archives.

Marine refrigerators usually run on 12V power.

That is the reason that yours continues to run even though it may not work when connected to 120V. In order to operate on 120V these units come equiped with a converter or transformer to reduce the working voltage to 12V. It seems your converter may have gone bad or the wiring or connections are not transferring power. Start with the basics, insure there is 120V power coming form the dock outlet into your boat and check your boat 120V breaker and any unit fuses . Your converter may be a small part built in to the unit or may be a stand alone converter. A wiring schematic of the refrigerator may be helful to locate and replace the converter if every thing else checks out. Be careful purchasing electrical parts as they are usually non-returnable.

AC DC Fridge

The last one I opened up for repair the compressor actually ran at 20 volts AC. There is an inverter to make 12dc turn to ac abd a transformer to reduce 120v to 20. I believe it was a Norcold

my fridge had a relay...

in the circuit that sensed 110volts. When it only ran on 12 volts, it turned out the relay had burnt terminals. I filed the terminals clean and it works fine.

Ironically,...

...that's the way the older Adler Barbour's work - 12v only.
