how do you wet sand

hey guys, this question is a little late, but do you wet sand in a circle, like buffing, or with straight line, like in wood sanding.

Id go in circles. being carful you don't have grit build up and causing scratches. A little bit of soap in the water really helps withe cutting action.

wet sanding direction is irrelevant. The key is WET sanding. 400grit + is so fine, you won't see marks except on plexiglass. The important point is that the paper not clog. It takes practice, but you'll get a feel for creating the milky abrasion from wet sanding. Too dry, the paper sticks and clogs. Too wet, it'll not cut into the surface you're trying to sand... washing off the paper regularly can make one piece of wet sandpaper go for hours...

In sanding wood for a fine finish at the wood workers guild, we do not use straight line. Were did you ever get that idea? Did you drink too much and the man asked you to walk in straight line?

When I get down to wet sanding it is all by hand. I need to have the feel of what I am doing with the paper. Wet sanding is just opening the surface layer of paint so the next layer will adhere. you should never need to stay on one area long enough for a power sander. You could also take way too much paint off with a power sander. The resulting deep shine comes from it.

oh ,i see, i missed that post.....i think cirular motion, light massage type pressure, start with 600 them move all the way up to 2000 then start your buffing. I was really impressed with the results. and it was the first time i started. I tried buffing alone, over and over again, but it will not get the shine back if you don't sand first.
