How do you test 3 stage charger?

See pic of charger. Wondering if my charger is working properly and not sure how to test it. Don't want to fry my new battery. The reason I suspect something isn't right......While cleaning battery posts, I failed to turn off charger. When I removed battery posts, the amp meter on the charger pegged out all the way, and stuck in the max position. I don't know if the meter went bad or the charger too. My battery monitor quit working also when this happened. Could this fry it too? While charging, I read about 13.5 volts, but how do I know that it won't fry the battery after it's fully charged? Thanks....Gary

Gary, I don't think it's a 3 stage. Check their

charging curve chart. http://www.newmarpower.com/batterychargersabchdm/batterychargersabc.html

If not 3 stage, should I keep using?

Fred, I see what you mean about the charging curve. But to get to just state it simple.....is this a good charger to keep on all the time? The manual (thanks Gord) advises that it should be on continuously. Would I be better off with a Guest 3 stage that can be bought for around 60 bucks? I guess I assumed that this ~$250 NewMar was far superior to a 60 buck charger from West's. Oh...and BTW, I found that the amp meter needle was hung up on the needle stop. I drilled a little hole and with a wire, lifted it over the stop and it returned to "0". Thanks

The only advantage to a 3 stage is the

ability to replace used power as quickly as possible. And because three stage chargers are more sophisticated electronically, they tend to have other cool features built in such as programmability for different size banks and equalization. If your use pattern is day-sailing and then parking the boat until the next day then your charger should be just fine. Of course that assumes that its' capacity matches up with your battery bank size. And Newmar has stood the test of time.

Daysailor....That's me....unfortunately

Wish I could say that I am one who is posting from the bahamas on my remote laptop....dream on.... Just replaced my cranking battery with a 750 crank amp deep cycle, and plan to install two 6 volt's for house current. Sound OK for the NewMar?

That's pushing it. Gord mentioned the charger

capacity as a percentage of bank size. I think the charger likes to be 10% of amp hour size. But you're pretty close. Again, if it works for you, save your cash for that trip to the Bahamas.
