Hi..I just bought a Catalina 22 and am not familiar with how one would run the ropes throught the mast to replace the old halyards? I would imagine its easy and I am asking a silly question but nothing is easy if you dont know how to do it. I didn't get manual with this used boat so I am looking for your help. Thanks. Cher D.

replace/change

I will assume you now have the wire/rope combination and are talking about changing to all rope halyards ran back to the cockpit. If this is what your asking its a pretty easy change, you can buy this already to go as a package or buy the parts yourself. Either way you will have to change out the sheaves in the crane for the all line halyards. You will also need turning blocks both at the base of the mast then back to the cockpit. If you are only going to be using halyards then its a fairly cheep project, however if you choose to add more control lines you would need to consider organizers to make the turn to the cockpit. I would add a mast plate this will allow you to use blocks at the bottom of the mast. 60' X 1/4" for the main and 65' X 1/4" I'd stay will at least line rated at 4400lbs Mine are pelican with a spectra core, easy to splice. But you can also buy line right here, a quick call and I know they will take care of you and point you in the right direction.

More info

If you want to run the lines THROUGH the mast you will have to do some cutting on your mast. On my C-22 I did this with some help from a friend who had experiance in this. I was able to lead the main, jib, and spinacker halyards, and toping lift through the mast which cleaned up the lines quite well. All lines were lead neatly to the cockpit and single handed sailing was quite easy. I was happy with the results.

What year is your boat?

Catalina 22's from about 1985 on have internal halyards while earlier boats have external halyards unless a PO changed them to internal. Nevertheless, it seems from your question you already have internal halyards. Assuming you have wire with two eyes with line attached, you'll need to remove the sheaves from the truck (the thing on the top of the mast), tie messenger lines to the wire eyes at the truck, remove the turning blocks at the bottom of the mast and pull everything out. Turn the wire over end for end being respectful of which is for the jib and which is for the main, attach new line to the now "new" bottom eye of the wire and pull everything back up via the messenger lines. Reattach the turning blocks on the bottom of the mast and put the sheaves back into the truck. Viola! Done.
