How do you relocate the diesel cutoff lever.

My 1990 Legend 35.5 has the diesel fuel cutoff lever just inside the companion way. I find this very annoying especially when I am single handling. I want to move the control lever near to the helm. Has anyone else done this or changed out the manual lever for a electrical solenoid system like those used in newer boats? If so I would really appreciate some advice on how you changed your cutoff.

have not done it but have been looking into it for the same reasons.
Moving the cable would require some pretty twisty routing (and standing on your head in a phone booth to do it).
The electrical solenoid is avalable and is about $50 plus the push button and 12 volt control solenoid (auto part, little black square 30 amp relay). The yanmar manual has the part numbers and not just any old solenoid will do. These things have to be able (my engine) 20 lb and a 1" stroke.
from page 9-43 of the 4JH2E service manual
solenoid type 1502-12A7U1B
rated voltage 12 volts
loaded current 30 amps
loaded force 9 kg (19.8 lb)
no-load current 0.7 amps
no load force 4 kg (8.8 lb)

should bolt right on if my eyeballs and the diagrams are correct. The wiring has high current from the mains supplying the helm station which leads to the 12 relay and then to the solenoid. and ground return of course. The control wires go from the ignition key to the push-button to the control side of the relay and back to ground.

My older 35 with the same hull had the shut off in the stern under the removable rear seat. I had to replace it and it was a 1/2 day job

Thank you for your help. After researching Bill's information I think you are dead on as to what is needed. However I am wary of the high current draw, I suspect failures could be frequent. In fact I met someone who has had problems with his solenoid burning out. While researching I discovered Yanmar makes several sizes of cutoff cables the longest being 23'. It appears to be a complete assembly with the lever on one end and the proper coupler on the other. The price is about $50. The part number is 129470- 67560. I guess with me manual makes more sense and is the way I plan to go even if takes a half a day to install.

on my 2gm20f i bought a thrombetta soleniod and put it on the engin in place of the cable the pull part draws high amps but only for a second and then the hold side of solenoid draws only 4 amps and is wired to the key switch so dont cut of the key till the engine is stopped completly but it works great and i didnt have to use a relay solenoid as of yet as i wired it wit #10 wire on the install.....

I can understand that it does mean you need to reach in under the companionway to shut off the engine but I don't see why single handing or not has anything to do with it. The fact that the shutoff is inside and not accessible when the boat is locked up is a security advantage. Given that all Yanmar engines start keys are the same, having the shutoff outside allows anyone the ability to take the boat.

I would have to agree with Alan. That is the reason I've not upgraded to the push button on the helm. you dock or anchor and leave the motor idling while you tend to lines or the rode then come back and pull the fuel cut-off. Not much of a panic here that I've ever seen.
