What is the "best" way to mark anchor chain so that amont of chain being used is apparent? Paint, using a color code will be removed over time when lowering and retreving the chain with a windless. Looking for ideas. Thanks for the help.

different colors of paint!
Gordie: Seems that spraying a link every 25 feet with a different color of paint would hold a couple of seasons. I guess you could put a file to your chain a notch it like my six shooter!

white primer
The problem with using various tones is that you won't be able to see them at night. Using Rustoleum White Primer, I put a three-inch mark at 25 ft, a 10" mark at 50', a 3" at 75', two 10" marks at 100, a 3" mark at 125', three 10" marks at 150', another 3" mark at 175, four 10" marks at 200'. I use the hook a lot, and end up having to repaint the marks yearly.

I don't know if zip strips are the same thing but I used different colored electrical ties and left the stems showing. It has worked on both chain and three strand rope. West marine has a package of different colored ties. I used one color for 25 feet, another color for 50 and so on. when I go to 125 I used a different color but kept the same color for 25, 50 and 75. I also had made a plastic sign with my code which I put on the inside of the anchor locker. I knew damn well that late at night I would forget my code. The foredeck light lets me see how deep I am with the chain and rope. So far none have broken going through the windless although I carry a spare package of ties.

Nylon strips
I don't remember where I got them but they are about 6" long and you splice them into the rhode at various intervales. They hav held up verry well.
