I was thinking about moving down to the Charleston SC area, and was wondering how was the sailing? Slips? I live in New Bern NC but my wife thinks its a little slow. I like slow... but might take a look around. Thanks in advance for any advice. Larry

Main difference.....cost.

You'll find it a lot more expensive in Charleston. Sailing is good in the harbour, a bit busier than the Neuse but none of the nice quiet anchorages like around Oriental or in the Pamlico. If you want to cruise for a week or two it's either motoring on the ICW or out in the ocean and down the SC coast to Hilton head. Slips are very expensive, close to Miami prices last time I looked.

I was thinking that.

Yea, that was what I was thinking. I looked at a few prices of slips on the internet and they looked a lot more expensive. There is a lot of places to sail here, all the way from Ocracroke to the Core Banks. And the fishing is good. That has been my argument for staying here. My wife on the other hand wants a few more things to do. I could fish and sail for the rest of my life and die happy. I was also thinking about around Jacksonville Fl. Some one suggested that. In my opinion it’s going to be hard to beat here. You have a protected (for the most part) non-tidal river. With plenty of little spots to drop the hook, good fishing, and semi-reasonable slips.

Jacksonville's not much better

Kept my boat in the Ortega river once. Slips are being turned into condos, again expensive but there is sailing in the upper part of the St. Johns River but not in summer .. way too hot.

I live here

I live in Mt Pleasant just across the river from Charleston. Sailing is fun here, can be very interesting at times in the harbor. There are times where you contend with the currents of 3 rivers, a tide, and the wind. Can really mess up a line you're trying to sail. Some good racing down here with CORA. A lot of slips, but yes, they are somewhat expensive. Of course, this is coming from a trailer sailor... Contact me if you'd like some more info about the area. Lived here about 6 years, and been a realtor for the past 3 years, but just getting out of it so don't worry about me hitting you up for business. LOL! But I do have some contacts and info about the area.

Charleston SC info

Hey, Well thanks for the invitation. I could use more info on Charleston. I sold my Bar/Restaurant in NJ (15 years is enough.) Moved back down south (originally from Norfolk Va.) Love to sail so I started to look around Oriental and settled on New Bern. For the most part I am happy here. But the crime is a little high for such a small place. My car has been broken into 3 times. Just last night I had someone at my front door demanding food at 1:00am. I showed him what I might give him instead of a sandwich and he left. I live in the historic area, so its not some bad section of town. I think its just a run of bad luck but my wife is nervous. She also misses things to do. All I need is fishing, hunting and sailing some wood working, and I’m just as happy as a clam. I have a C&C 35 mkIII, with a centerboard so I only draw 4 feet. I was looking at an area called Goose Creek, seemed safe, houses look nice. I am looking for a house somewhere in the $200,000- 400,000 range. I could use any and all advice that I can get. Thanks Larry Jordan. usa4feedom@earthlink.net
