How do you keep the birds at bay?

Now for what we really did. Look at my spreaders and you’ll see I added a line on each one to its shroud. That was to keep the big birds from perching so easily. I would also hoist a pig stick with a flag to the top of the mast to discourage the birds. I initially used a Gadsden flag (Don’t Tread On Me) but the liberal guy from Wisconsin thought I was trying to make a political statement. (Seriously. He really did. I liked him otherwise.) I also ran a line from the clew end of the boom just above the sail cover to try to trip them up. Honestly, I don’t know which of these measures worked but I never had the issue again.

Nice sail!
Thanks, Bubbadog! I had it made for our H23 but kept it and flew it on our H260. It really was smaller than it should have berm for the 260 but still accomplished the purpose that I bought it for. Now that I’m sailboatless it stays in the closet. I miss flying it.

One of the most common things we see at our marina is birds perching on lifelines. It also doesnt help that there's a bird sanctuary next door

I got a plastic owl and a teddy bear cat that I leave on the mast rest and deck. Disconnect the wire rails and let them hang down below deck level and it has so far been life changing.

The only sure fire way that I've found to keep the birds at bay is the machine they use at airports for that. They aren't cheap, but maybe you can get the marina to install one, or share the expenses with the marina and slip holders. Good luck.

Oh I wish! I have a hard time getting them to install missing bolts and correcting safety issues on the docks. Good thing the management company's contract is up soon!
