Hello, I am winterizing my boat and I read that I should grease the seacocks. Dumb question, How do I do that? Do I need to remove the hose and squish some grease in there? Do I do it from outside the boat? Can I spray teflon somewhere? Thanks for any info. Barry

Excellent question

Last time I hauled my boat I took some waterproof grease and a small paintbrush and just applied it to the ball from the outside of the hull. This only lubricate half of the ball so by rights you should pull the hose and do the ball from the inside as well. Since these balls are water tights I doubt any grease actually makes it past the seal anyway but it is easy to do. Does anyone else have a better way? Dave

greasing ball cocks

I use the spray on lithium grease from under the hull and work the lever several times. be sure to properly bleed the valve if you've got the seacocks with bleed screws

Lubricating Marelon seacocks

We have some ancient (1977) Wilcox-Crittenden bronze seacocks on a Cherubini 44 that we are reconditioning and they appear to have a zerk fitting for a grease gun on the side of the bottle body. Maybe others do too. I will know more about this Monday when I actually get into it. Back to my boat-- anyone know how to properly keep Forespar Marelon seacocks lubed? JC 2 jc@jonniecomet.com

Lubing Instructions for Forespar Seacocks

To J Cherubini II - From the Forespar web site (link provided below): Lubrication Marelon® - Marine Grade Plumbing Systems Valve Lubrication: As a follow up to previous Tech Tips; it is important to know that while Marelon® fixings are corrosion resistant, they do require twice yearly lubrication maintenance. These valves should be activated on a regular schedule. The handle should be moved throughout the open/close path every thirty days. Leaving a valve open or closed without moving the handle can cause freeze-up. This is true of any valve, including bronze. The law of nature is "use it or loose it". To lubricate ball valves and seacocks while the boat is in the water you must: 1.Close valve. 2.Remove hose from tailpipe. 3.Remove remaining water from valve/tailpipe. 4.Swab waterproof grease (water pump grease, winch grease) or LanoCote™, generously, on ball. 5.Reattach hose, checking for fatigue and rusted hose clamps. 6.Activate valve a few times. When boat is hauled, you can perform steps 4-6 from outside the hull to lubricate opposite side of ball and seals. The Lubrication section is from “Tech Tips”, http://forespar.com/resources/tips/MarelonLube.htm My technique: Use a soldering brush (one of those metal-handled brushes duct-taped to a stick. Have wife (W) or signifiant other (SO) on outside of boat while you go around on inside and exercise the handles. Knock on the inside of the hull to let W/SO know where you are. They recriprocate to acknowledge. Lube each valve a couple times before going to the next one. Caution(!): MAKE SURE there is no water (or waste) in the line before opening it! *yks Not following this Caution could result in ;{ divorce (if married), separation (if significan other), or worse! However, if everything is done properly you'll have a great job and the valves will work smoother and more easily. *5
