So we just got our 1980 Oday 30.
Fusebox is right by the stairs to the cockpit (in the middle).
The starboard electrical is not working so I want to check the fuses. Cant see how to access them! There are only switches on the panel. I tried to unscrew the nut on the switch and pull it out but its wired to the panel behind it.
I know I'm missing something obvious. Anyway know how to get to the actual fuses?

Thanks.

Hi,

Maybe I am missing something, but my O'day 35 doesn't have fuses, just circuit brakers. The switch panel is behind the companionway steps. To remove the panel I take out 6 screws and the panel pulls out far enough to access the switches. I have added new switches, changed wires, etc. There is enough room.

good luck,
Barry

That is right, breakers not fuses. If they ain't working the are most likely busted and need replaced.

If they are not working, you need to find out what caused them not to work and fix that.

Yeah, you are correct of course!
As it turns out our bilge pump had been rewired (has its own switch/breaker in an always on configuration). What was labeled the bilge lead was putting out a weird 5 volt current, because someone had rewired it to run the autopilot.
The joys of discovering a new old boat.

Sounds like there were not enough circuits so someone doubled up. If the bilge pump itself has been rewired you would want to get a new one. The stray current is also a problem. The best thing to do is have a qualified marine electrician look at it. If you were going to tackle the job yourself, you should consider reading Nigel Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems. It is one of the most comprehensive marine How to books on the market.
