How do you determine height?

I need the keel-tallest point height (minus mast) for our Hunter 40. It's a deep-draft boat. I have a flyer for a H40 (I think '84 boat) that gives the IJPE and mast height.
MH: 58'6"
I: 53'9"
draft = 6' 6"
so... does that mean my free-board is 4' 9" (Mast heigh - I ) and keel-step would then be 12' 3"?

This is for shipping, I emailed hunter, but got an out-of-office reply...

I would contact (phone) Hunter and see if they have that measurement. I don't think you can calculate it that way.

You can probably figure that your draft is okay at 78". I would then measure from the "waterline" to the highest point (maybe the bow pulpit) and add those together.

MH is the distance from the top of the mast to the waterline (58'6"). You would need to know the heigth of the mast to determine by substraction the heighth of topsides and cabin. You can use the main halyard with a downhaul line to approximate the length of the mast to the top of the deck. Just mark the downhaul line and measure. To the difference just add the boat's draft (6'6") and you should have a fair figure for the keel and topsides height.

no, that would tell you the elevation difference bottom of keel and the botton of the forestay, not the highest point for shipping. DON'T, I repeat, DON'T commit to any number to a hired transport co. no matter how sure you think you are. Only get involved if you yourself, (or a personal friend or relative) are towing the boat IMO. There can be no doubt you will be close to the over the road clearances with this boat no matter where you tow it. Interstate highway clearance is 14' in urban areas. You will be close to this when the deck height and under keel clearance is added to your number, but let the party who is responsible to get your boat to it's destination measure it.

Are you trying to figure out whether the boat is trailer-able at all? This is a decent sized hauling job. My boat is smaller than yours and I have always asked the people I was shopping my tow from to give me a quote, telling them nothing more than the approximate weight and where it is. These guys seem more than happy to go out and measure it, (unless it's in the water).

The boat hauler will take a long two by four with a level and simply lay it across the top of the highest point (or a couple of suspected highest points) and drop a tape to the ground and add 6 inches. If he messes up, he'll have to answer to his insurance company.

K-D,

This can not be that hard. Your boat and 250 more just like it left the plant by truck and were shipped all over the country. Hunter and the folks that shipped the boats for Hunter already know the answers. They can tell you if the boat was shipped with the stanchions, bow and stern pulpits in place or not. And I'm betting not.

It is just going to take some time and effort on your part to track it down. Once you get the answer no reliable shipping company would believe the numbers anyway so they will determine the true height once it is on the trailer. These trailers are specialized boat trailers and not just your average low boy that hauls around bulldozers.

Shipping is not going to be cheap by no means. Have you considered hiring a Captain to just bring it around on it's own bottom. In the long run that might just be the easiest and cheapest. You could ride part or some of the way. From Clearwater Florida to North Carolina took about 7 days with two people and they stopped one or two days for weather. That was less than $1,200 including one way air returns for two on Southwest. So lets say 20 days which is way to many but anyway @ $300 a day that $6k or less. I don't see shipping ending up to be much different.

This is just going to take some effort on your part to sort this out. There are to many variables to contend with over the Internet.

thanks for the tips, this is for the shipping company to determine if it's over-hight. My wife's in the NAVY, which is why we are moving, and they won't cover the cost unless we haul it out and ship it. I'll definitely have them measure it before hand, but I don't think the quote I have is for over-height, just over-sized.

KandD,

There has to be a Senior Chief somewhere that can get this done for a couple of cases of Kona Coffee. :>)

Were is it you are taking her, the boat not your wife.

Next to Captains and Colonels, Senior Chiefs and Gunny's are the folks to know.

Well if you are going to Little Creek you better bring your Bugle so you can try out for the band at the Music School. Help pay for boat expenses.

That's about 3-4 hours by car for me. We just went up to Hampton (Gloucester Point) to look at a Trawler that is for sale.

Keep me informed as to how the move is going and if I can be of any help.

Playpen has arrived

Playpen made it to Virginia, we're going to inspect tomorrow. It was an adventure, to say the least.

First, the pickup was 2 days late, which just gave us more time for prep and saved us about $60 of yard time at destination.

We needed empty/full weight tickets and pickup and destination, but the driver didn't know that, so we arrived and the boat was loaded without the trailer weight empty - we had to tell him to unload it and go weigh it.

The driver said he'd be here on Friday, then called and said he'd be there thursday, so the plan to meet the boat with a check fell through. We decided to just deposit the balance in their bank of america account (how we payed the deposit) and there isn't a BOA in Mississippi. After a 3 hr detor north to Tennesee, we made the deposit and got on the road.

We've been told the Boat is ok, but tomorrow we'll give it a throughoug look-over. Here's hoping.
